Looking to pick me up one of these, then I discovered that apparently there were 2 dials for the 38mm tri colore? One has less text.. which I like. Are these 2 different models?

Register overlaps and markings are different as well.

Are you sure the right picture is a 38mm model? The increased overlap ist typical for the 42mm variant, because the dial needs to be filled (for optical balance) while the distance between the subdial centers stays the same when enlarging the case.

Yes, there are two variants. I believe the one on the right is the original model (ref. 03.2150.400/69.C713) with the hour subdial overlapping the minute subdial. The model pictured at left appears to be a rarer variant with the correct subdial overlaps and red accents on the subdial hands. Looks like the reference number for that is 03.2150.400/69.M2150... maybe? Zenith needs to organize its SKUs.

Nope, the Original 1969 is 38mm and has that subdial pattern. See here: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/h...-mm-a-trimmer-update-to-a-classic-chronograph

OK I think I answered my own question: Same model, but in-line changes. The one on the left is new, the one on the right is the outgoing dial. So going forward, they will be using the dial on the left.

Yeah it would stand to reason the 38mm would have more overlap. Less surface area. The larger doesn’t need to overlap much.

Incredible watches. Certainly on my wish list.

I do too. Very weird that Zenith has done this completely under the radar, as the new dial is much closer to the A386 than the original one (which is a very good thing).

I believe it is a 38, and the 42 has the date at 6 o’clock

There was an article about the changed subdials, or a discussion on here some time ago, can't recall from the top of my head.
I was interested when they first released it, but hold back because of the stupid subdial overlap.
Once I saw it, I couldn't unsee it.
I'm glad that they changed the layout to what it is now.
The release originally sparked some controversy and discussion, because 1. It was different from the original A386 without reason and 2. the subdials were rendered partly useless by the overlap, especially the minute counter between 15 and 20.

The new/old layout is the one to get imo. Beautiful and high on my wishlist.

Happy Hunting @WatchVaultNYC , hopefully you find one soon and share some pics ;).

    Thanks!

I have the model with the old dial. Honestly, the subdial issue doesn't bother me at all, and size and weight wise, it's a terrific watch at 38mm. I do welcome the 'de-cluttering' of the subdials though, in terms of having few markers - the new one looks cleaner.
