An omega expert just told me that the attached watch which has been on my family since it was new seems to be quite valuable today. Same perso told me that this forum could be able to give me aswers? So, what us it worth? Should I keep it incase the value goes up over the years or ...?

Sadly your watch has a later tachy bezel. It will cost you 2k$ just to correct that. Since people are willing to pay that for the bezel only, it'll give you an hint that these are highly appreciated nowadays

The bezel is not original... likely replaced in the 70s or early 80s during a service.

Assuming the movement matches the watch, it is likely approaching five figures in value, even with the incorrect bezel.

The bezel that was original to the watch was a "dot over ninety" base 1000 or base 500 depending on the model of 2998...

The bezels are easily damaged and meant to be easily replaced. I don't think people thought of these watches as vintage investment quality pieces back in the day... they were worn until they needed to be fixed.

Thanks again Ibis! My watch is the 2998-61 and my father bought it in 1962 and used it every day until few years back.

 

Geordie - as i said i knew it was valuable and simply wanted to know more about it.

 

Wear it in good health. It's a beautiful watch and rare watch, quite distinctive from the later 321 and 861 models. Only a collector will notice the incorrect bezel.

Just don't ever send it in to Omega for service!
