So is the new 10% in effect immediately or is it something that is likely to be challenged also?

I’ve had my Zentih sold three times but this keeps scuppering the deal so it’d be good to be able to get it done at some point.
I refer you to @gatorcpa 's post above. This is going to go on for some time. Please accept my apologies as an American.

The 10% tariff is scheduled to be effective on February 24, 2026, for up to 150 days.

Do they come on top of the tariffs that the SCOTUS considered illegal but remain in effect for the time being?

There will be a bit of a scuffle, but no, there will only be the 10% flat tariff. Certain tariffs might remain, on steel and aluminum for example, but on watches, 10%.

Of course, Congress can set the tariff rate to whatever they want, if Trump convinces a simple majority that it is needed. I bet these 150 days will be spent trying. That's what he was supposed to do in the first place.

That is actually unclear at the moment.

Latest AI compilation of current news stories:
Status of "Old" Tariffs: This new 10% tariff is intended to be "over and above the normal tariffs already being charged". While the previous high-rate Swiss tariffs (39% or 15%) were ruled illegal, the administration is attempting to use different legal authorities (Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974) to keep many of these existing duties in place or replace them with the new 10% baseline plus additional investigated rates.

Now 15%

QUOTE “I, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10% Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been “ripping” the U.S. off for decades, without retribution (until I came along!), to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level,” the president wrote on Truth Social.

“During the next short number of months, the Trump Administration will determine and issue the new and legally permissible Tariffs, which will continue our extraordinarily successful process of Making America Great Again - GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE!!!” he continued. UNQUOTE

A majority here are sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Best to just gird your loins and wait till November elections where we can rebalance our 3-legged stool.

In May 2024, the Biden administration doubled tariffs on solar cells imported from China and more than tripled tariffs on lithium-ion electric vehicle batteriesimported from China.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_tariffs_in_the_United_States#cite_note-:0-78"><span>[</span>78<span>]</span></a> The administration also raised tariffs on imports of Chinese steel, aluminum, and medical equipment.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_tariffs_in_the_United_States#cite_note-:0-78"><span>[</span>78<span>]</span></a> The tariff increases will be phased in over a period of three years.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_tariffs_in_the_United_States#cite_note-:0-78"><span>[</span>78<span>]</span></a>

The administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama imposed quotas and tariffs on Chinese textiles in order to shield US domestic producers, accusing China of exporting these products at dumping prices.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China–United_States_trade_war#cite_note-Guo-2018-28"><span>[</span>28<span>]</span></a> During the Obama administration, the US additionally accused China of subsidizing aluminum and steel production, and initiated a range of anti-dumping investigations against China.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China–United_States_trade_war#cite_note-Guo-2018-28"><span>[</span>28<span>]</span></a> During these two US administrations, US-Chinese trade continued to grow.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China–United_States_trade_war#cite_note-Guo-2018-28"><span>[</span>28<span>]</span></a> During this time, China's economy grew to be the second largest in the world (using nominal exchange rates), second only to that of the US.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China–United_States_trade_war#cite_note-Chong-Li-2019-39"><span>[</span>3</a>

I think I finally understand what he means by MAGA: Make America Great like it was before I came Along.
Yup, back to 15% already...

For those who may have forgotten, this is not a political whataboutism or history thread, but a thread to give updates and discuss current tariffs, mainly on Switzerland (but I think Japan is also relevant), because the current tariffs are directly related to watch purchases.

Obviously, @dsio will be forced to close it if the discussion gets too political.

The point is not tariffs. There's an argument to be made for tariffs. Your examples were strategic, targeted, clearly executed, and legal.

As opposed to Trump's.

Edit: You shared some good examples in a thoughtful post. I thought it a good level set. Still, to me there are significant differences. But I can see your perspective.

And it started with a lie about selective trade deficits with made up tariff percentages. The home of penguins also being targeted made it laugable.::facepalm1::

I'm more concerned about the impact of the USD exchange rate on my potential watch purchases, and more importantly the loss in purchasing power in general.

However, obviously a weaker USD makes the US a buyer’s market for non-US buyers. But it also makes it more difficult for the ROW to sell to the US market.

And this is just watches.

In less than three years the tariff nonsense will be thrown away by the next president.
Hopefully but the damage will stay. Companies won't lower prices back to pre-tariff levels.

I want to disagree with you but then my mind remembers all those super caring, amazingly empathetic, corporations and companies saying, "No!! Our prices are only going up because of the supply chain," during the pandemic, "as soon as we get through this together they will return to where they were"...

and they never have nor will.

Until the majority, that would be 51% of any group that supports a product, stops and says "fυck you" with their buying dollar, nothing is going back down. It's the nature of Mankind - greed, and it's definitely the nature of Capitalism.

Prices are usually sticky in the best of situations, and big corporations collude constantly.
