I have been offered this Constellation at a good, (I think..) fair price. I just want people's opinions on it as said watch. I know it's not particularly rare but I like the shape and dial personally.. It will be a replacement for my Gold capped pie pan which is for sale ATM. See what you think.. It will need a new crown spring. Probably a clean and new crown. If anyone can give me a rough estimate to have these done I'd appreciate it. Also, to me the crosshair looks quite thick..?
Also - the cross hairs miss the Y by a bit too much - the two n's in Constellation look the same, instead of one being more curved - the text doesnt appear seriffed enough? Or perhaps I just can't zoom in sufficiently
If it's a redial they took care to run the 12 - 6 line just inside the spine of the E in OMEGA (as it should). They really did well near the SWISS MADE - the whole phrase is centered instead of spacing the two words apart with the crosshair exactly between them. The rotor is a different color which bothers me a bit. The watch has been polished more than a few times judging by the bezel and crown. It looks okay to me at first glance only if the price is right. Wearable, but not a star in a collection.
I think re-dial as well, thanks for the printers guys, I think the seller has managed to obscure the tell tale second n of constellatioN.... that's what was suspect....Oh we'll, bank balance safe for another day!
That's what I said two days ago. Then shelled out $800 at the Toyota dealership and $2650 for the 2500.
My gut tells me that it is probably original and that the photos are poor. The 19 jewel cal. 501 rotor is correct for the time frame of the watch based on the serial number. The color differential may be caused by a flash or uneven lighting. A seller that cares should be willing to get in-focus photographs to maximize value. Without more information, you have to treat this as a redial and be sure you're getting it at an appropriate discount. Also factor in a cleaning and new crown, which would reduce value by another $200 or so. To me, this is a $500 watch maximum, with another $100 to $200 to be added if it can be proven the dial is original. Hope this helps, gatorcpa
if you could get clear photos of the text, that might help? Looking again at "officially certified" I can see small serifs, so I take that concern back.
I think it's a refinished dial, the crosshair are quite thick and the two n's which Canberra omega pointed out, I have attached pictures of same kind of dial from the same period, crosshair are thinner and the n's different. View attachment 10260 View attachment 10261
I dunno. First "n" looks exactly the same, second one we can't see on the subject dial. Cross hairs placed in the same position on both dials. Radium remnants on both. Dials in better condition tend to show slighly darker printing. Need to see sharpness of printing through a loupe. That's the only way to tell for sure. I think seconds hands on subject watch could be a replacement. Correct length, but shortside barb (just made that term up) is a little different that the second watch. My opinion is that it's nice, but not worth top dollar due to all the questions, gatorcpa
Think I will leave this one. Got STS to have a look and believe it to be a redial. Thanks for the opinions/advice guys!
