Some really interesting watches as well as interesting estimates. I can't see any of the 60's Speedmasters going for less than even the high estimate.

I would have serious trouble buying any of these purely from the web pictures though. Theres just far too much room for interpretation as to how they'll look in the flesh.

Agree 100%. I hate the prepared/fluffed nature of Christie's pictures. Phillips also edits them, but in a less artsy way that gives a better idea. I think Watches of Knightsbridge also does a decent job of presenting the watches in their natural states.

Interesting stuff. Hoping a cb case speedy is on the list. But let's wait for winning bids.

None are killer examples from the pics (though the -3 is nice). Is it that much of a softening, or is the gap between these and the killer examples just widening?

Thank you @Spacefruit. I really enjoy reading your post-auction analysis and play-by-play. It is the most valuable teaching tool for those of us trying to better understand vintage Speedy's in the marketplace. Great stuff.

I think you might be correct @oddboy. Most of them are run-of-the-mill and nothing special. The one that sticks out is Lot 157, the 2915-3, that also went for well over the estimate.

Perhaps potential buyers read your blog?

Thanks SF. I find your site especially valuable as I try to learn more about Spacemasters and I really appreciate all the effort that goes in to it. Your comments on the prices realised are very illuminating and indicate that logic disappears in the auction room environment at times. I would certainly find such a sale a dangerous place to be and I guess that aesthetic reaction to an individual piece could well swamp data-driven research one might have done in preparation. But, then again, I believe that we should be buying these things on the basis of how much we like them - highly subjective - rather than because they might be perceived to have a given 'investment' value: that's what's happened with too many classic cars, leading to them being locked away in storage rather than fulfilling their role to give pleasure in use on the road.

just a question regarding the second BA145.022, Lot 158. Could it be possible, that the bracelet on that watch is not a 1116/575 ? For me it looks a bit different.

I get alerts on my droid home page whenever space fruit posts to his site. :)

    Very solid analysis. Enjoyable read.

Softening of market, who knows for sure. I think more like others have already mentioned, just not enough high quality pieces recently sold to say otherwise.
