Hi, is it best to unscrew the crown if not wearing a watch for a significant amount of time or does this not really matter?
Thanks.

Why would You unscrew the crown, it's safer in the screw-down position and keeps all kinds of moisture out 馃

Why answer a question with a question?
Only asking as not sure if it is better to release the spring that is in the mechanism.

Never heard of such a thing. I see unscrewed crowns with watches set to 10:10 at AD's though. An unscrewed crown will still have some WR, but I think it's always better to have it screwed in.

regardless of WR talk (unless you live underwater) I think it is totally unnecessary to unscrew crown while not wearing.

I have not used my car for a week. This has got me wondering if I should jack it up to take the weight off the springs....

I think I might get what you鈥檙e asking: do you mean unscrew it and then hack the movement so that the watch stops?

If so, I think the better choice is just to let it run down until it stops on its own, and leave the crown screwed down to protect against moisture intrusion. In other words, just take it off your wrist, put it away and forget about it.

Bunch of twats, this forum has the most obnoxious, sarcastic, least helpful members I have ever experienced.
Obviously you haven't spent more than five minutes over at The Rolex Forum.

Yes it's best to do so, so the watch can breathe better between two dives.

Ever heard of a crown spring needing to be replaced?

nope?

Then no need to unscrew it.

If you took yourself too seriously, I could see that. If you could take a little good-natured ribbing, laugh a little, and play along without getting defensive, you would get a chuckle, and your answer too.

I know you pull out the crown on quartz watches to conserve the battery but mechanical watches there is no benefit.

Maybe a person wants to manually wind a movement occasionally between being worn without putting unnecessary wear and tear on the crown tube and threads. No matter how careful you are, crown threads take some wear every time the crown is unscrewed. Maybe a person keeps a watch in a dust-free, dry environment like a safe while the crown is unscrewed where there's ZERO chance of dust and moisture getting in past the o-ring seal.

The OP is right about the vibe here sometimes.

Maybe, but that's not what the OP asked. And he was given an answer by the 1st commenter, but he chose to respond with a snarky comment. Hopefully the OP got the answer he was looking for 馃憤

This is by far the most friendly and helpful watch forum out there.

try getting advice on TRF or WUS.

he was not mocked or insulted. Very mildly teased maybe.

I don鈥檛 really see people being dicks here, Phil really covered it all in the first reply and OP seemed to be upset right from the start, no need to unscrew the crown just leave the watch and let it run down. Not complicated.
