The dealer is asking for $10k. Unfortunately, I was not able to open the caseback. Also, the 10 o’clock marker is missing lume. How does this one look otherwise? Should I pick it up?
In my opinion this is not a 10k $ watch, too many mediocrities on it. I would continue searching for a better one in better condition or less issues.
Understood, but I understand the unpolished CB case with facets is the main attraction, right? Even the bracelet looks original.
This is definitely not a CB case, but a HF. And it is all very beat up, and not in a good way. This just looks tired and not attractive at all to me. Have a look on the Sales sections here on the forum and you will find much nicer ones for less. At least i’we seen some 145.012’s here on sale right now.
Ok, thanks. What kind of price would make sense to pick up this piece, then? Aside from the missing lume marker, I don’t see any other major flaws? Are dials for this vintage obtainable? Thanks!
I see often on this forum when people post watches that are real world watches that have issues (as most watches that have been worn for 30-50 years will) but are genuine and fairly intact, that many people will just say walk away, find something better, pass on this one. But if I came across the watch above, and the seller had a high-ball unrealistic idea of value, I would still be interested in being able to make an educated offer if I wanted it for a daily beater and not a prized investment. So for the curiosity of those of us passive buyers who happen into a "shop" that has something like this in the case for example- not wanting it for resale but a nice "beater" assuming it "works" and will need a proper service by and expert.....what would someone consider a fair price to offer the shopkeeper?.
I’m just afraid that maybe this shop is the kind that holds on to it until someone walks in ready to buy it at asking price, and not selling it for less. Have seen my share of these kind of dealers in the past. But try to make him an offer, my question is how much would be a good price for this one? Missing lume on dial, beat up case, missing lume on hands, beat up bezel, incorrect bracelet, service crown and maybe also pushers. Do you have a picture of the movement, this is critical to see prior to buying. Especially if it would look as beat up as the exterior. Then it would be a definite no-go.
I’m not the right person to put a price tag on a (imho) flawed watch. I tend to overpay (I try not to!) for top quality and to refrain from picking good deals on flawed watches.
Nor is it a CB case. But having said that, it's a fabulous looking watch at a bargain price, so if I were you I would jump on it so you can liven up the forum by bombarding us with more juvenile threads about how it complements your real grail.
For one, you're pictures are really terrible so it's hard to critique the watch at all. From what I can see, I'm not sure the case is as bad as everyone's making out and although not ideal, one marker missing lume isnt a deal breaker for me. The pushers look original which is good. The bracelet is certainly not original but the main issue is i just can't just the overall attractiveness of the watch from your pictures. I'd say as low as $6k if the dial isn't that good, up to maybe $7k+ if it's attractive overall
Not even if they were Canadian dollars would I pay $10K for this. Especially since you know it's going to need a service too. With the wrong bracelet and the unattractive lume, I wouldn't see this going for much more than $6K.
Even though I am not the OP I thank you all for the input on this-it’s helping me hone my eye and knowledge about what to look for and what market rate for collectors is. A watch like this, in a random shop, is a real world scenario that many of us will encounter at one point or another and it’s good to know what to look for. Pardon the noob to the modern collecting game question- but what does “flat” and “CB” mean in this context?
for 10k? i doubt it. need to see inside the caseback. otherwise the lugs doesn't have the facet feature of the cb case.
for your reference. certainly, it is not a cb66. https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/whats-selling-where-unheralded-1960s-sport-watches
