·Up for sale is a top-tier example of a very desirable chronograph - I had contemplated selling through the dealer channel but would like to see this great example go to a fellow collector without the dealer mark-up. I have to emphasize that it’s rare to see these pop up in condition such as this. See below for all details:
Dial: The dial is a 9/10. All lume plots are present and matching. No markings, scuffing, or aging is present on the dial. The only reason it’s not a 10/10 is the lume plot at 2 o’clock, which may have been damaged slightly at a prior servicing (see hi-res photos for more detail). With that said, compare this example’s dial to others that have been offered for sale over the past 3-4 years and you’ll see that it’s a remarkable example.
Hands: Original hands are in excellent condition with perfectly matching patina. When hit with UV light, all lume briefly glows and fades out at the same rate. As many of you know, these UG Compaxes were one of (if not) the first chronographs to employ carved out lume plots in the subdial and chronograph hands. The subdial hands are those often seen on “transitional” examples, which fits with the serial on this one (see below).
Case / Bezel: Case is in terrific shape, with original, sharp lines still present. Caseback is correct and in good condition with crisp and correct serial engraving (2,568,436), which places this example within the earliest second-gen Compax batches. There is no pitting or corrosion between the lugs. Original bezel is in mint condition with no damage, scuffs, or markings.
Crown: Crown is an unbranded replacement - the only non-OEM / original part on the watch. I have found a replacement crown on eBay and can send the link to the ultimate buyer if they’d like to replace.
Movement: UG Cal 85 (i.e. Valjoux 72) movement is in great shape with no visible wear or corrosion. The watch is keeping good time (note: I do not formally time my watches, just wear for 1-2 days to monitor general timekeeping) with a strong power reserve. Chronograph functions correctly and stops/resets crisply. I believe the watch was last serviced in 2015 (see marking on inner caseback) and the prior owner mentioned that he wore it less than a handful of times over the past four years.
Accessories: None - if a strap is required, I can work with the buyer to find an acceptable replacement to the one shown here.
My asking price is $18,000, which includes fully insured Fedex Priority shipping. Payment via PayPal (F&F or add 3% if using PP) or direct bank wire. Face-to-face in Denver is welcome for local buyers. Returns are not accepted unless I have materially misrepresented something (and I don't believe I have). Finally, I have plenty of references available as a buyer and seller that I can provide if necessary. Thanks for looking and thanks to OF for the space.
