I’m new to this site and so this is my first post. I’m actually a novice when it comes to watches but I have a genuine interest. Luckily, I’ve been getting some good advice from a watch collector from the NAWCC site. He referred me to this site because of all the Universal Geneve experts/collectors. I recently came across this Universal Geneve watch and am struggling with where to go with it. It is a little out of my league ($’s) as a collector so I’m trying to find the best course of action. It seems I probably need to try to grade it. I took the watch to my local watchmaker because it isn’t running. He said it doesn’t look to have any mechanical problems, that it is just “gummed up” from oil after being in storage for so long. He suggested a good cleaning. I bought it third party so I don’t have any history/box/papers on the watch. I thought it was just a neat looking chronograph. I understand Christie’s is a good place to sell due to their high exposure and watch sales history. I also though about putting it up with one of the online auction sites but I’m not sure about how to handle the $’s (escrow) or shipping. I understand with some online sales sites, the site will not help in the escrow process due to the fact I’m a new unknown seller. Any advice is greatly appreciated. JoeBirmingham
Wow, beautiful watch. You probably know how rare they are, and yours looks to be in excellent shape despite not running. A black dial is up for auction in two days here: https://catalog.antiquorum.swiss/en...ef-22531-compax-lot-314-46?page=1&q=universal
Wow - great comp. Much nicer than mine but a real help. Will we be able to see the end price? Thanks : )
The black dial I believe will get a significant premium over yours. You can live stream it and see price for sure, and they often will publish prices.
yes I dont' think you can compare any black dial UG vs white dial UG. I would say the price could be double? To the OP, you could try listing it here (if you get permission), you could do Chrono 24, Ebay, Catawiki, or you can do the auction houses? I think those are the most common options...
and obviously you need to consider net to you, not just the sale price. You cant look at a sale price of XXXXX at auction and then charge that here for a private sale, there are obviously trade offs with all the different approaches.....
very nice. Also agree with direct sale if you have reasonable offers. Save the buyer some and you probably net the same or more. Auction house will take their seller fee as well as buyers premium, so 27k is more like 17-18k to you (assuming 25/15)
I was told this black face watch had some problems. Maybe not original condition? I saw it sold for $63k. ???
Hi Joe, I really enjoyed your pics and you got great advice on your watch and sales opportunities. But your recent quention is IMO a bit confusing. What do you expect from here ? GLWS
