Is it even a pocket watch? What size is it?

I would call this a pendant watch rather than a pocket watch. In any case, it's uncommon even amongst tri-compaxes. I can't find another example off-hand, but I'm sure I've seen one before.

My initial thought was that the exhibition back (see-through back) was aftermarket, since UG during that era (almost) never did them. But on a small production run pendant watch, there's maybe a chance it's original (though I don't see a better than average finishing on the movement). I'd like to hear others chime in there.

As for valuing... a lot of people on this forum have become jaded and won't give you a value. Too many people popping on this forum just to ask for free appraisals.

I'd value it at between 2.5k-4.5k. It's not as valuable as a wristwatch variant, even if it's rarer. But there are niche collectors out there.

How can you tell if someone just recased a Tri Compax or if this is a factory UG offering? If it's factory I would assume there would need to be a case reference, case serial, and UG case stamping somewhere?

I think gold value of the case is there. Sadly the movement has a service moon disc. Had the original been there, the movement and dial would have attracted more parts interest. 2500 - 3500 USD.

Can you share a picture of the inside of the caseback? Or are we looking at a glass caseback?

Interesting. My first thought is custom made case for a loose movement

I think this was a damaged lugs situation. Lemonade out of lemons?

It's very possibly a recase, as others have mentioned. I swear I've seen a pendant UG Tri-Compax before, but I just can't find an example and it could be my delusion.

We can rule out this being a sympathetic rework of a damaged-lug watch. The case shows no signs of lug removal. So it was either designed that way by the manufacturer or by somebody else. I feel that with the complexity of the chronograph pushers and calendar setters, it would have been a tedious job for an independent casemaker.

would a UG factory case legally require UG markings somewhere? And other stamping as well?

it would be interesting to see if there are markings anywhere on the interior surfaces of the front and rear bezels and the mid case

Unluckily I can’t find any UG marks except the 750 carat stamp
