For most of its early history, Universal didn't much use dial logos, it simply wrote out the brand on the dial (case stampings are another subject). In the 1950s, dial logos start to appear. Sala has a proposed chronology in his book, but interested in forum opinions and refinements. These are five logos that I've found, in the order Sala proposes, beginning about 1953 This last is a nifty adaptation of the logo for the Unisonic tuning fork watches. Please post additional examples if I missed any, and add your thoughts and observations
It is a dial logo, but the modern one, since the late 1980s. Unfortunately the least interesting period of UG (IMO)
It just happens to be the one they've used for probably one of the longest periods, I'll ask Trev about maybe looking at the shield one but its going to be hard in that resolution
They did change them about a fair bit, didn't they? On the plus side, it makes the pieces approximately datable without referring to any case numbers. I'd be for the pointy-bottomed U if doable.
I'v been thinking a little about this myself and sometimes cannot see the forest for the trees, but I suspect there may be one or two more logo types found on Polerouters/Polarouters in addition to those listed above: 1. The non-transparent U found often found on 215x caliber models (this is the kind where one can't see whether or not the crosshair runs through the shield - as distinct from the second image in this thread) 2. The non-transparent U sometimes found on bumper models - including the Polarouter - like the shield above, but with a less curvy "U". Sorry about the poor pics. I particularly find it difficult to find good quality images of bumper dials. The second type in my post here can be seen, although not clearly, in some of the bumpers on Polerouter.de.
Good to see this, so looks like the start is 53ish and onwards. Thanks to LoUs as usual. I would also like to add that I think the shield dial logo starts around 56ish from the samples in sala.
