Unexpectedly growing rate difference between dial up an dial down

Hi everybody

I’ve got a new watch (with a JLC caliber 822) which shows an unexpected behavior on the timegrapher. Fully wound the rates for dial up and dial down are rather similar but after some hours the rate for the dial down position drops by 10 to 15s/d while the rates of the other positions don’t change much. Here are the screen shots of the measurements for fully wound and after running for 3 hours, 11 hours and 16hours:

Fully wound

After 3h

After 11h

After 16h

I’m wondering if this is something that could lead to a problem in the long run and therefore should be fixed now/soon or if there is nothing to worry about and the difference between dial up and dial down could simply be addressed during a routine service several years down the road.

What do the forum’s watch makers think?

Suggest you take your findings to the dealer you bought the watch from, and see what they say. If that isn’t possible, check your owner’s manual for a service centre, and send the watch back with a report of your findings. If you don’t have the owner’s manual and the warranty………..?

I bought the watch online from JLC, so I guess I could just send it back to where it came from ;-) But I'm wondering if such a round trip to JLC should be now or if it could wait until the first service.

Looking at the difference between the balance amplitude and timekeeping in the dial up and dial down positions, even at full wind, there is something going on with the jewel of pivot on one side.

This could be a flattened pivot (from an impact), or contamination in the jewel, or possibly even a large difference in the amount of oil between the two jewels. The variation there is excessive even at full wind...

Completely up to you, but if you are bothered by the timekeeping, you could send it in now. If not, send it in later. This issue likely will not cause your next service to be any more expensive.

I see. Thanks for the explanation Archer. I'm going to test the watch again after it ran for a full day and see if the rate for the dial down position dropped even further and if it did I think that would start bothering me.
