Hi guys! Saw a bunch of these UG FS Railroad on an Italian e-commerce site. What's the background / story behind these watches? I'd appreciate other info too - what era is it from, rarity, movement, etc? Thanks!
I have one but unfortunately don't have any pictures to hand as it's with Rytetime at the moment. These are a lot nicer in the flesh than I expected and at 36mm are a reasonable size. I picked mine up at a good price on Ebay but unfortunately the winding stem is broken and there's a problem re-using the original crown so I'm still looking for another with a good stem and original crown. These are not in any way a rare watch and I'd be reluctant to pay over the odds and you can be assured that another will come up in another couple of days. The thing I can't work out is whether they were made with both brushed or stainless cases or whether have just ended up being polished in the past either by their owners or their owner's watchmaker. I also think I've also noticed a couple of dial variations but, again, I'm not 100% sure. If I see an example I'll post it here.
I've seen them regularly in Italy. The ones I have seen have had a ceramic dial like the one in the picture.
came in different case styles too, I'd guess the pictured case is the more recent early 70's whereas the other style is more redolent of a mid 60's style, the photo is of what I think is the earlier style and is an e-bay for a lot of money
Funny...just saw this: http://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/universa...576631?hash=item41a2f0fcf7:g:Jn8AAOSwCQNWfaVaPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
I've had this back a couple of weeks now. Any Ebay bargain euphoria dissipated immediately after I got the bill for the service but I'm pleased that I have one of these now; it ticks away like a veritable tractor.
Funnily enough, pretty is not a word that comes readily to mind as it feels much more of a functional beast. In any case here's a better photo:
There are presently four on ebay ranging from 39.50 to 790 €. They can be found for very cheap. Now I must admit that @Carlton-Browne example is very nice. That enamel dial and the numbers get to you after a while. I love that 4.
I may be wrong but I like to think that I have most permutations of UG searches configured. I'd say that one comes up on Italian Ebay approximately every second day; a lot of these are repeat offenders with unfeasible Buy-it-Now or starting prices, however. They are not rare. When I get a moment I intend to distil some of the information from a couple of the Italian fora but with the benefit of Google translate.
I remember seeing a lot of them in an Italian buy & sell site. That was when I started this thread. Unfortunately, I don't remember what the site was! @Carlton-Browne : I look forward to reading your synthesis of available info on this watch
Damn that's a handsome and functional watch! I love the relief and the sheer legibility of the enamel dial.
