I see what your saying. My perspective is just different, to me we all rely on the government. When I flick the switch and the lights come on that's relying. The recent blackouts shows how fragile some of these things could be and that's why I think it's important to be informed and engaged. I also email and call. I've actually had some follow ups or been directed to help. Those are the ones I support and tell people about.
Well ya I was hoping I wouldn’t be have to be overly nuanced as I am not anti government. I also use my towns library and drive the roads they made etc. I don’t rely on them for money or health care, it’s not that I don’t like the government, I just feel better when they aren’t around. Having said that I am involved in my towns local government and am finding it interesting, I was curious to see how things work.

Bombs cost money, people. Pay up!

I’ll never evade taxes, but avoidance is a moral obligation. What I don’t understand is why we don’t just get a bill from the tax authorities now that they have all of the information.

Really? You only use barter and hard currency (gold and silver) or crypto? None of the hospitals in your area are owned or operated by the city or county?

Because TurboTax, H&R Block and the Big 4 accounting firms all have very high priced lobbyists in DC who make sure IRS lacks the funding to properly communicate that information to you.

The Golden Rule (He who has the gold, makes the rules) still works and has in the US since July 5, 1776.

Ah shit I guess I shouldn’t say anything at all if people will look for loop holes in everything written. I could have explained it in greater detail but I thought people would get the gist. Unfortunately everyday I work with people who are dependent on the government for just about every aspect of their lives and it’s difficult to see the struggle day in and day out and assist them in becoming more independent which is a very difficult task. I kind of figured people would understand the difference as I was not trying to say anything negative but yes if it makes you feel better please continue.

This is what I do for a living.

My point is that no person is an island.

You can call it a community or government or whatever you want, but no human survives without the assistance of others.

I meant no harm nor was I trying to start a political debate. It’s just disheartening to see those reliant on the government for everything. I took two days off because of that one girl has to wait till Monday until I can get her to the food bank. I’m trying to get housing for people with section 8 vouchers but during covid times properties in the area I work became hot, rents were increased well above what the housing vouchers cover. The housing authority has 50 people with vouchers and nowhere to put them. Monday and Tuesday I spent 16 hrs on the phone trying to find a place for 1 guy got absolutely no where. It’s giving me a panic attack let alone the poor dude who needs the house. At least last time I ran into this the guy had bought bitcoin a few years back so I could get him in somewhere. Things are tough when your reliant on others for everything, that’s not a condemnation just a fact. I am grateful there is a safety net available but it’s not real big. Shit is real out there it’s hard to appreciate unless you live it or see it up close, and I don’t recommend either to anyone.

I agree, it is a fact.

There are many out there who don't believe there should be any safety net at all.

I am not one of them.

The hospitals all around my area are owned by companies or private universities. DC still has a City-owned hospital or two, but I read not too long ago that it may not be for too much longer.

As far as I know, the only govt owned hospital in Portland, OR is the VA.

Based on this, there are four, including the VA.

Although one is psychiatric only.

Interesting fact, although he said that a lot I think it came from a russian proverb first! I attributed it to him for a long time until I checked.

But yeah I didn’t mean to suggest paying taxes is bad... just a heads up in case someone had to deal with back taxes or an audit if they didn’t realize is all!
It was a Russian proverb, hence the point of the statement. 😉

I think it’s worth listening to some of the lectures of the late Milton Friedman to get some clarity on these matters. Perhaps start with his discussions on the Phil Donahue show from the 80s.

In Croatia, half of my paycheck goes to government but still have to wait few months to a year for doctors appointment. Big government just doesn't work in some parts of the world.

Disappointing to hear that. Not going to go off on a government schpiel as I got very little in the way of answers. It’s just a bummer that things are a struggle for so many. Buddha said “life is suffering” right. I was a Buddhist for a couple years found a lot of it cool. I have lived in abundance, and I have lived in poverty, I have learned to be content wether hungry or full. Ha, covering two religions I’d do a third but I’m getting tired, I hope things improve for all.

Heaven forbid that people should actually comply with the income tax laws.

Like Ronald Reagan used to say, “Trust but Verify”.

I voted for Reagan it came back to hunt me after retirement if you work for a public agency that don't put into social security you loose a third of your social security even if you put in enough to collect from all the other jobs you had before. Funny I would get that yearly notice from social security saying I was going to get more at retirement nothing in it saying I was going to loose a third. Found out after retirement looked to see what A-hole did it and dam some one I voted for. They should give me a refund for the extra I put in that I did not get put into social security since 1974.

I think it’s fine to voice our gripes. Here is a good “tax protest” song that sums it up, he’s not saying don’t pay, just getting it off his chest.

That song is very appropriate, as today is tax deadline day in the US. Individuals get an extra month this year only, due to the pandemic.

There’s a line Taxman that goes:
That’s one for you, nineteen for me.

That’s because the UK had a 95% marginal tax rate on extremely high incomes back in the mid-1960’s. It caused the Beatles to leave Britain for a time. You can read more about it here:

https://ultimateclassicrock.com/the-beatles-taxman-lyrics-uncovered/

Hope you all are paid in.
