Late last year I finally found a piece I've been looking for in a year - a Tissot tank in very good cosmetical condition. For me, the splendid dial design really makes this watch. A true child of the Art Deco movement in the thirties, it evokes a fantastic feeling of stepping back in time when you look at the watch - just what I was looking for! Looking up the serial number dates the watch movement at around 1933, while it was probably cased in around 1935 making this lovely piece of wrist art 85 years old. The reason for my search was a 2016 purchase of two Art Deco bakelite boxes for Tissot watches. These were made by Jousi Turku, a Finnish company working with celluloid, bakelite and other state of the art plastics. They are probably amongst the earliest bakelite products from that company, as they only started producing bakelite items in 1938 and the style is undeniably Art Deco - which more or less went out of vogue during the war (and I don't think Finnish companies were producing a whole lot of these sort of items during that time...). There is no doubt that the Tissot will be with me a long time, but I already now know who will be the next caretaker. My wonderful girlfriend has been expecting our first child and was due to give birth Friday 5th of January. On Tuesday, she'd been complaining of pains for nearly 18 hours, not being able to sleep and so on. Three calls were made to the hospital before they agreed on taking her in a giving it a look, perhaps giving sedatives... On the way out of the door, I had a look in the mail box and found a padded envelope there - succes! I think everyone can guess what happened when we arrived at the hospital When she's 15 or 16, she'll be gifted the 100 year old Tissot. I might keep the boxes though
“ Dad ... I don’t want this old watch. The google chip in my head tells me the time and so much more!!”Sorry too much “Black Mirror”. Congrats!
Congratulations, she is a gift! Get ready to scuff all of your watches on car doors, buggies, cots etc but it's well worth it!!!!
Congratulations, ConElPueblo! If you didn't have children, especially daughters before this and you thought you were protective of your watches, you haven't seen nothing yet. The feelings a father has for his daughter, of wanting to protect her and care for her are indescribable. I suspect you have found that out by now. I selfishly hope we don't lose your knowledge on this forum while you put all the time you should and will into enjoying her, raising her and caring for her. As the father of a only child, a 12 year old girl, I say enjoy it all......I miss every age and stage she has gone through, but each new stage is as wonderful as the last and has had it's own joys and beauties. Don't blink, you will miss something. McK
Troels - she’s a little beauty alright! Congratulations mate and the best of wishes! @McKinley is spot on Daughters are very special to us Fathers. But beware of feminine guile, it starts very early, my Daughter is only three and knows how to get exactly what she wants from me. But she does it in such a very beguiling and charming way, I’m happy to indulge her every whim in fact I’m powerless to say no! Fathers with Daughters- we’re all doomed.
Great start to 2018. Side benefit I can attest to is the late night hours you'll be awake - more time to fish and catch deals before anyone else! My watch count tripled after my first in 2016!
Truls, congrats! You're a rich man! But, don't fool yourself, the only watches, of mine, good enough for my 18y old daughter is my Rolex DD and 1675 The Speedmaster (tropical) I gave her at her confirmation, she didn't appreciate, so I had to trade it against a Rolex 16220, which in hindsight turned out to be a lousy affair....
