Tudor Black Bay P01

Stopped by my local Tudor AD to find they finally received the Black Bay P01. I’ve been very keen on checking this one out in person as seeing photos online left me uncertain of this piece in general. Sometimes it looked good, sometimes it looked totally awkward. Add to that the love/hate (mostly hate) discussion surrounding this - it’s a tough one to judge from afar.
I can now say, in the metal, I’m completely unimpressed and uninterested in it. The fit and finish simply doesn’t suit me. The lug-to-lug is way too long and the various components are sharp & unrefined (read cheap).
I will admit, though, the dial is lovely. Handsome matte black finish with slightly pillowed lume plots. Just needs a totally different case and bracelet...
On to other watches.

We need to look at it, to remember it, so that we don't ever allow it to happen again.

Oops. Tudor design team slipped on this.
Not even an award can garner interest for this.

When I saw it on their website, I was intrigued. Seeing it outside of staged marketing, I’m much less so, and I love Tudor.

This was based on a prototype that no one liked thirty years ago and was canned. You think that they should have got the hint. I saw this in the metal and is definitely a miss.

With the money spent on a P01, one could conceivably find a neo-vintage Tudor Sub to purchase instead...

Not for me. Tudor watches are generally large and bulky anyway, but this takes the biscuit. Each to their own however. If you have the wrist for it I guess it could be an interesting piece

It’s a fun idea. I was pretty excited when it was first announced—it was interesting.
I tried it on this summer—no way. The length of
It is ridiculous. Great dial though.

I like asymmetrical cases (some of the classic 70’s seiko divers). I may wander over to an AD and see is they have one in the flesh.

What I appreciate about the P01 is that Tudor took a gamble with it. Sure, this one's a bit of a miss, but at least they're being experimental and throwing stuff to the wall to see what sticks. I don't know of any other brand in their price range that does that.

Everybody hates now, then Tudor will stop making it, and then it will become the most sought after Tudor and everybody will want one ; )

I saw one at the local Tudor AD and I liked it. Yeah, it had some "sharp" edges and some of the finishing is "raw", but that's true with a lot of Tudors. Tudor cases, IMO, tend to be "slabby," with sharper edges. I thought the watch fit my wrist just fine, and I have a 7-inch wrist. I do think this watch will be exactly what you want it to be. If you want to hate it, you will find plenty of reasons. If you want to like it, ditto.

I do think Tudor missed, big time, with the strap. This watch, and the prototype it is based on, is a special-purpose watch, but to equip it with that hybrid leather strap is a fail. I can just hear the Tudor design committee: "It will be at home in both the boardroom AND the sea!" Bleech. It's the laziest kind of watch company thinking. It's like putting a croc strap on a Ploprof and marketing it as an all-arounder. The P01 is a pure tool watch, should be equipped with rubber or nylon. Will they lose some initial sales? Probably. But it's also a watch that if Tudor allowed it to be what it was originally intended to be, it would, after a while, gain a following.
