Wow! van Aert

Second in a full on sprint yesterday, then wins a super-hard mountain stage today with an incredibly confident attack. He’s also a handy time-trialist.
have to mention vingegaard to, he is absolutely amazing

Today MC showed us how he has won 34 TDF stages. He has been something special for a long time.
Good luck for one more !
What a way to go out.

50 metres from the line I thought he'd lost it and in the interview immediately post-race he looked absolutely shattered. Still evaded questions about equalling Merckx so I think he's saving the reaction for getting to 35. Do you have any hats left @Engee ?

I’m more than happy to keep eating them! What a legend, and such a nice man as well. I love how he never fails to thank his lead-out train every time he races.

Well that’s that in the bag. The only way Ineos will beat Pogacar now is by signing him! All eyes on Cav now as we head to Paris…

Four weeks ago who would have thought we could be saying that?

For Tadej I really, really hope everything in his bloodstream was put there from birth. Incroyable!

I’m confident he’s clean.

Despite being in awe with the performance of any participant of the TdF in general, history has taught me to always be prudent when it comes to making assumption on how “clean” these riders really are in the end. 😗

If I’m going to assume the worst I’m not going to enjoy the sport. I may be naive but it’s the only way I can be a fan of cycling. When the evidence that he dopes is presented and proven, I’ll accept it, but I’m not going to be cynical. There’s no enjoyment in that.

Yes, it's an unfortunate thing that athletes who might actually be clean in any given sport, are all somewhat tarnished by the cheaters.

Really agree with you Al. It is most unfortunate but after having witnessed the Banesto-connection, the US Postal-connection, the Telekom-connection, the Festina-connection, the Mercatone Uno-connection, the Astana-connection, etc etc etc.... it seems that I have indeed become a bit cynical.

No later than today has the police descended on the Bahrain Victorious team's bus and hotel to operate a search warrant.

I truly hope that Pogacar and the other stars are finally clean, but I will not be able to hold my breath on this one.

I am nevertheless still able to enjoy the TdF, if for nothing else but the beautiful French landscapes in the backdrop of each day's stage. 🥰

SPOILER: DON’T READ IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED!

Incredible sprint! Wout van Aert has, for me, been the most exciting rider in a fabulous Tour! I’m disappointed for Cavendish, fairy tales are only fairy tales because they’re not supposed to happen. Maybe next year, maybe never. That doesn’t matter. He’s been fantastic, or should I say, he and his lead-out train have been fantastic.

But van Aert - wow! Wins on one of the hardest mountain stages, a time-trial and a sprint - that’s special.

Sad it’s now over for another year, but the Vuelta isn't far off.

I agree with you both.

I've enjoyed watching this tour and yet - sadly - have to place an asterisk beside it. Not being cynical at all; it's just the simple fact you cannot do what these lads do, at the speeds and consistency they do it, on water, gels and pasta. Those who ride clean or, as is likely the case these days, do not resort to tech to gain an advantage, are unlikely to reach the podium. Nevertheless, I love this sport and while the Stanley Cup may be the hardest team trophy to win in sport, hockey players (or football/baseball/basketball etc) have nothing on professional cyclists.

On that note, fueled by oatmeal and peanut butter toast, I'm going to go drag my sorry ass up a 1 KM hill at half the speed these kids climb 14KM mountains.

It’s certainly been a thoroughly absorbing Tour, don’t think I’ve watched one so closely in quite a few years. I’m going to miss it! Looking forward to the Olympics now, then Vuelta, and of course the delayed Paris-Roubaix…

Congratulations to Pog an amazing display of authority beyond his years.
A great win on the final stage in Paris by WVA , thanks to an incredible (Renshaw style) lead out by Mike Teunissen.
Bad luck had its way for Cav, the opening came too late, he literally ran out of road. Still a great effort the likes of which we may not see again or maybe one more stage next year ?

Who knows what riders form will be next year? There’s not a lot of sentimentality in sport at that level but there’s good publicity to be gained from the record being broken and therefore his presence, so maybe there’ll be a place in the team for him on that basis? For sure he will need a superb lead-out team as he has had this year but if Sam Bennett is in better form I can’t see Cav getting a chance.

As for yesterday, I think the rivals played it well. They made DKQ burn themselves out chasing down the breakaways knowing the win meant so much more to them. By the final they were ragged and Cav needed to freelance, and because of that he lost position.
