Interesting case. This watch has been listed several times. On the last completed listing, it did not make reserve at $4750. ,The listing had a full description and disclosure of possible discrepancies in the watch's composition, especially the dial..

Now it is listed again. This time the list of disclosure facts have been omitted and with only a BIN price of $7500 & make offer option

Too much information? Well I suppose it depends on whether you are a buyer or a seller. :D

I guess he's trying to minimize his loss. Here's another 2998-2 that sold at Omegamania in 2007 for 21,400 CHF (~$17,000). It hasn't hit $4000 yet!

Do you think he paid too much? Or is it that too many are showing up on the market lately?

Prices are dictated by condition and originality of the piece. We've previously discussed how the original watch cited in this thread has many non-original parts. The omegamania watch falls short as well in terms of originality and even condition.

Yes, just meant the other one, though I have no idea what it cost him. He turned down $4750 , which might be a little low. But with the dial and caseback not optimal I don't think it is worth $7000. nor his asking of $7500, even with the lollipop. However he does not seem to be able to get into the mid/upper 5000s
Point is then , with a lot of 2998s on the market , buyers have a lot of choice, making getting top dollar harder for all but the best specimens; so that these middle condition ones are harder to sell. Sort of the supply side VS condition side. A one two punch affecting sales.

That first 2998 was purchased from a dealer ~1 year ago. I'm sure he paid too much and had too much faith in the dealer. As far as the Omegamania watch, those 2007 prices were nuts! It looks like the original hands were refinished by Omega. I imagine the original bezel was long gone. When considering watches as an "investment", these two are good examples of the pitfalls that exist.

I think though that in the 5-10 year timeframe, two things will happen - the NASDAQ will surpass the highs it set during the dot com boom and vintage omega prices will attain omegamania 2007 levels.

Which gets back to Mike's advice, What ever you buy, buy the very best you can afford; condition.

I hope not, at least for a while. I'm a buyer and not much of a seller.

Some of the gold connies are already close to if not at the omegamania levels - some watches that went for 2k 3 years ago are now pushing 4k. And if you missed the cloisonne dial thread, the neptune dial seamaster that was estimated for $60-100k went for $265k which is more than similar watches went for in omegamania. And nice speedmaster 2915s now already go for $50-100k which is already getting up there.

Then there's also the pie-pan re-release which is still an unknown quantity. If it becomes a new production flagship dress watch, piepans could jump overnight.

In terms of this watch though, I'm sitting here thinking if this was mine, would I just part it out? The parts are real, just not intended to be together in that way. Probably a few people could complete correct 2998s with it.

I think you're probably right about this. Infact I believe Omegamania prices for Speedmaster 2915's have already been exceeded for top examples.

the case is probably of a later 105.003, as well as the dial. The Bezel is even from a cal. 861. However the hands were lovely!!!
