Hello OF members. I picked up this Timex Electric because it actually looks pretty cool, nearly new, and has the hidden crown. Also, the price was certainly right. It doesn’t work though :( , and I have since learned that this is not uncommon for Timex Electrics. As you can see, the watch is in nice shape, and I will take some polywatch to the crystal if a donor movement can be found. I am in Canada, so postage will or will not be an issue with this low-cost transaction. Thanks in advance for your help

Is this in fact an 84/85 vintage model? What movement is in it? Early Timex Electrics (60s vintage) used a German made a Durowe movement. If this is the movement in the subject watch, I have a parts movement. Can your watchmaker not check out to see what the problem might be?

Thank you Canuck, indeed, it is a vintage model. I might need a different guy for any electrics  - clearly you were the person I needed for the accutron  . I got this about 5 months ago, and didn't know enough to be confident poking around. I’ll see if I can get in without making a mess and will report back!

Over the years, Timex has used a number of different movements in Timex Electric watches.

Obviously, my attempt to upload the link I referred to didn’t work.

I hope this link opens for you. Any of these movements that show a jewelled bearing in the balance cock are German Durowe movements. Timex bought the manufacturer Durowe when they were wanting to get into the electric watch business. After a time, they switched to a much cheaper series of electric movements, more closely resembling the rest of the Timex mechanicals. As in, cheap, no jewels! If this site opens for you, the Durowe movements show jewels, and Timex ones don’t. The movement I have is a Durowe.

Ahoy, there be jewels in there! I can see through the battery cover, but cannot see an obvious place (grove or indent) to pop off the back to confirm that it is the Durowe you showed, but it is an exact match for what I can see. I have read that these can sometimes be front loaders. If we are not sure of how to open it, then I can ask my watch guy this week to open it for me.

    With gratitude, Dave

I’ll take a look at my donor and see if there is a chance it can be resurrected. I thought you said your guy had looked at yours and pronounced as being kaput! It has been a while since I have paid any attention to my donor. I’ll open an compare it to a picture of yours when you have it, and I’ll see if this one runs. We need to see if the movement model numbers are the same. By the way, the numbers 84 and 85 refer to model numbers for the Durowe movement, (picture I uploaded), and not the year 84 and 85. Timex used the Durowe movement in the early to mid 1960S. That is, until they began to realize people were servicing these Durowe movements. Timex wants you to be buying NEW Timexes, not fixing old ones! The later Timex Electric (IMV) we’re junk!

Thx, I will get a movement pic in a few days. Until then, the contacts have been cleaned, and still no luck. I’ll PM you with the next details

    Best wishes

Update: Thanks to @Canuck for searching his stash for a possible donor movement, unfortunately the one he had was not in good shape. The case and dial are great, so my search for a mvmt continues. If anyone has a donor mvmt, kindly let me know
