Swiss-French horologist & watch maker Abraham-Louis Bréguet, aged 76, passed away in Paris where he was buried at the Père Lachaise cemetery.
Bréguet improved the lever escapement and the automatic winding mechanism. He patented and constructed the first Tourbillon escapement, an invention of his British colleague John Arnold.

September 1776, the first submarine " American Turtle " became operational by attacking the HMS Eagle in the harbor of New York.
American clockmaker Isaac Doolittle was instrumental in completing the egg-shaped "sub" by working on the flintlock mechanism and the timing device of the underwater mine.
