Thoughts on this vintage Omega?

Hi. I recently inherited this vintage 14K Gold watch. The crown is missing so it would obviously need to be repaired and serviced. The guy at the watch store told me that I should sell it for melt value because the band is a "lost art" and no one would be able to re-size it (it is currently very small). I'd hate to destroy it if there's someone out there who would enjoy it. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

I kind of agree. It’s not a hugely fashionable or popular model and a goldsmith would be required at some expense to make the band smaller. If it needs a piece fabricating to make it larger, it’s significant cost.

Given the above, scrap price or maybe just above is about its value.

Personally I’d see if there are any ladies in my family who wanted it, but given the high price of gold, even it’s scrap value will be a reasonable amount.

Don’t need to scrap it. If short. It will fit a smaller wrist. Can’t size up, but can be sized down more if needed.

Tiny bit of band damage at 11:00 side. Crown. Generic steel or chrome finished crown

It’s useable and can be worn as a jewellery watch piece

If you sell. Ask 20% over scrap value

Just to add, in your place I would not invest anything in a repair in case you end up selling it. The buyer may only be interested in the gold.

If it’s sized too small and needs work, selling for scrap is your only realistic option. There are in fact ways to extend the bracelet, at the likes of STS for instance. It’s not quite a lost art, but who in their right mind will buy that knowing to get it sized up and repaired will cost nearly as much as it’s market value again for a piece with next to zero collector value.

Out of interest, is the band by Omega (ie, was the watch sold as we see it in the photos) or was it made separately for the watch?

It's an integrated band, you can't remove it from the watch, so the whole thing is Omega.

I think it's rather cool, but I have odd taste.

Fairly certain it was sold that way.

The band looks very tactile - I bet it feels good!
It's actually pretty cool. Seems a shame to melt it down. Though seems the alternative is to throw it in the safe and forget about it.

At the rate gold is climbing in value, this may actually be a very good idea.

Adding one rung to the buckle would be one option for making the bracelet larger. Fix the watch, re-size the buckle, then wear it as a dress watch. Sell it for scrap value? Not an option, unless you’re starving.

This is a very different watch entirely, it's an 18k solid gold ultra-thin powered by a Cal 71x series movement, most likely a Cal 711. Its very similar to this Constellation I wrote about but a De Ville variant with a slightly different case.

That is a very special and cool watch, especially with the OM Swiss Made OM Dial which indicates that it too is made of solid 18K gold.

Thanks dsio. I had it imported earlier this year. I have not seen a solid gold linen dial like it. I am guessing this a rare bird?

The 71x references are all uncommon, but an 18K variant with solid gold dial in nice condition I think it's fair to call rare. They don't have great water resistance and don't withstand abuse well so your example has definitely been well looked after.

Not starving. Would never wear it because it's no small. Seems more like a woman's watch even though it's supposed to be unisex. Not really looking to sink money into it if no one would buy it. For now, I just put it in the safe.
