    Hi

I like a chocolate / Tropical dial Watch....but this looks like it has had a hard life....just look at the head of the screw by the serial on the movement ! I think that says it all....and it's overpriced IMHO....by about £2k.

So ... would a good service get this all cleaned up or is this (rust / damage) irreversible?

WoW - and really couldn't be the same watch, right? What a contrast between dial and movement!!!

    By the way, bezel replacement?

5500 Euros for a '67!!!!!!! If that is a "Buy it Now" with no offer feature, this gent is just silly.

Those pics are pretty awful, so I am not willing to write off the movement yet. I am sure someone will come by and point out flaws I cannot see.

But the bezel is wrong and the hands look oddly pristine for a watch with that kind of UV exposure. I am not saying I don't like it, but those facts should give you some bargaining room. Of course, any seller with a "tropical" dial assumes that the patina alone justifies whatever ridiculous price they want to toss out.

Yes , over pricing is rampant with these now. Let's be patient folks and not contribute to the price hysteria any more then necessary, unless you run across a mint example that is worth the premium. I know it is hard but, believe me, patience wins the day with these things. And there is are plenty for everyone.

    Hi

I think both of these should carry a discount to market value due to condition.....not a premium.

For chocolate dials - there is a fine line between a desirable example and a beat up one. Most of the examples are of the latter.

Exactly. There have been high prices paid recently for prime examples and when a typical eBAY seller puts his watch up for auction he looks at the max prices that ref sold for and expects that without accounting for condition.

Jacek is one of the good guys, and is reasonable to deal with. But I think these examples fall in to the "no buy" zone.
Defects like Tropical dials takes years to achieve, and results are mixed at best.

Speedmasters with desirable tropical dials don't smack you in the face with a chocolate color - the dials are subtle and it is usually only through the correct lighting and positioning of the watch does this become apparent. Here is one of mine - a 2998-1 with a definite tropical/chocolate dial - it may not be readily apparent but in person especially when placed side by side with one with a regular dial the difference is obvious. I would submit these are the type of watches to pursue.

Personally, I'd pay a premium for a tropical/chocolate dialed Speedy, over an otherwise similar condition non-tropical example. Keep in mind that personal taste varies significantly on what is patina vs damage. Personally, I want it to look just like the black dial, but evenly aged to brown, without spots or flaking paint, not mottled/highly varied coloration, etc. Pretty rare and worthy of a premium. MSN's example above is spot on!

Most of the dials I see fall into the "damaged" end of that range. I ran across a really nice tropical 145.012 being sold at a watch show not long ago, and the seller wouldn't take less than US$7.0. I passed, but not by much, and if I hadn't just bought another Speedy, I'd have probably pulled the trigger.

When you consider the crazy prices being paid for "tropical" dialed examples of Rolex, Speedmasters are a relative bargain!

Sort of hard to see the dial through the reflection.
