A younger relative of mine (nephew by marriage, HS male American) is starting to take an interest in watches, which of course I encouraged. He'd like his first 'nice' watch for his birthday; he suggested an Invicta (picture the old comic of thwapping the precocious puppy gently on the nose and the person going "No!"), but he also showed an interest in some Citizens, which I kinda know, but also Bulova's current automatics, which I last dealt with when I was a teen myself. I'm negotiating a '69 right now myself, but I know he needs a relatively 'new' watch for sports, lifestyle, any common issues, etc. Anyone think this would be an okay choice to get someone started in the sub 500 USD range? Just seeking opinions, no need for arguments Thanks!
Modern Bulova automatics (I believe) are largely equipped with Chinese made movements. Best suited to gun owners who like small items for target practise. The ‘69 model (if it is vintage you refer to) might be a good choice if you can find one in good condition, and if he is the sort that will look after it. Bulova is now owned by Citizen, so yet another venerable Swiss brand is no longer Swiss.
Bulova 666 reissue. I have this watch. It is a kick ass watch. The movement is Miyota (Japanese) not Chinese. It keeps great time. It is manly. https://www.amazon.com/Bulova-Special-Oceanographer-Bracelet-98B320/dp/B07HCQB1QF https://gearpatrol.com/2018/10/08/bulova-oceanographer-devil-diver-review/#1 They can be had for under $400 new, with a little detective work. Here, I did it for you. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Bulova-Men...119277&hash=item5da24ef0fe:g:o2sAAOSwIxVeaU3YPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
Thanks guys! I that the 666 Diver may be the one for him. He's seen Hamilton as a brand in so many flicks (Sci-Fi, etc); I think he might actually get too worried about doing much with it.
How about Tissot PR 100 Automatic Chronometer for under $300? It is pretty good bang for the buck. https://www.jomashop.com/tissot-watch-t101-408-11-051-00.html
