I've been considering a birth year Speedmaster, and I want to make sure I am not overpaying and that I'm getting a good example.

I'm including photos from the listing. It looks like it's in really good condition to me, but I'm less familiar with vintage watches than I am new watches which is why I'm reaching out here.

What are your thoughts about the condition of this watch and what do you think would be a fair price in u.s. dollars?

 

I let the pros point details. Might be the angle of the photo but bezel is 1-2° off centered to the left. Should be aligned with 12 marker. Easy fix though.

 

you're right, certainly looks that way. I would have to ask for another photo from straight above it to tell for sure.

 

99% sure that’s a late 1977 production piece.

I’m also 75% sure that piece is for sale on this forum with different pictures. I think you can clearly see replacement hands in these pictures.

 

Good to know. How can you tell? I know that generation was not exact with the markings.

 

The -76 made from 1976 through the end of 1977 had 2 dial variations. This is the later variation. It has to do with the size of the S and was only present towards the end of 1977 through the mid 80’s. He claims to have an extract of the piece what date and serial number does that show? At least the first 6 numbers would be nice.

 

It’s difficult to see on the pictures, but for me it looks like it has been heavily polished. I could be the pictures.

Are you asking me? Besides from the polishing I agree with Foo2rama that the hands could be replaced. I’m not sure about the dial

 

Thanks, everyone. If there's a good chance it's a 1977 then I would stay away anyway. The only reason I would go back this far was to get the birth of your peace. Otherwise I would probably look for something in the 90s.

 

The extract says September 16 1977.

I have a October 21st 1976 (per extract) that I was thinking about selling earlier this year, but after having it serviced last month decided it's running too well to sell now. Last time I checked it only gained 0.5 seconds in 6 days from 8/19 - 8/25/19.

Original dial, hands, bezel, case, and 1171 bracelet. Mainspring was just replaced, and cyrystal was replaced with an Omega signed hesalite at a previous service since the old one was cracked. No idea about pushers and crown which used to be replaced routinely for improved WR, but they didn't need to be replaced on the last 2 services since I've owned it.

It was the bezel offset, and the hands that look a little to much like luminova.

 

Wow, that's the closest yet to my birthday that I've seen - Sept 14th 1977.

My saleswomen at the Denver OB and Rolex/Tudor AD has her birthday on the exact same day as my extract, and I told her 2 yr ago that she would be the only person I'd sell it to, but she didn't have the money - she was expecting a child and I guess they didn't pay her enough. I was happy to keep it though.
