This Watch Because of Tennis

At age 15 I quit playing hockey and got into tennis. Sacrilegious for a Canadian boy!

One very early morning I arrived at the tennis courts and found this huge ugly watch at the deserted outdoor complex.

The watch did not seem to work - looked abandonned too. I took it home where it sat in a drawer for years until I got it fixed in the early 90s and gave it to my dad. The repair was over $200 back then and my dad wore it on occasion.

In 2012 I became interested in vintage watches and although not on OF, I looked at Hodinkee every day. When I visited my folks I would ask to see the watch. It was clear that my dad no longer used it. The bracelet was still set to his early 90s weight - 300 lbs or more. Dad is now at a much better 180 ish.

This past spring he gave it to me. It needed extensive work, including the main plate.

The watch is back now and I will try to wear it at least through the weekend. Based on the work that was needed, it was not fixed by any of the OF watchmakers back in the 90s.

Oh, and my very close friend who stuck with hockey when I quit, well he ended up playing in the NHL! He made a great decision! .

That is a great piece that actually looks contemporary. Great story too. I was avid tennis player in my youth, then my time/travel intensive career made it impossible to get involved in any organized way. Need to revisit that now that I’m not living out of a suitcase and working weird hours.

Now you need one of these. Timex movement. Ran for over 30 hours on a wind.

I find Hockey skates weird. Not as weird as speed skates, but still weird. The Dickens fair rental skates are hockey style. I prefer my Harlick https://www.harlick.com/ boots.
One would not think the San Francisco bay area would be the place for ice skating. When I was little all the shopping malls had rinks. I think these were for the Canadian and Minnesota expats. The speed skaters hung out at fashion island, which was a mostly abandoned shopping mall. The ice rink was the last one to close. Some of the rinks were only open one or two days a week. The pros trained on the other days.

The one I liked was Winter Loge in Palo Alto. Built in the 1950s on a bet by two Silicon Valley engineers. It is mostly outdoors. I was told the compressor is from like a 40 story office building. There is a huge southern facing wall.

They could run it in the summer, but there is no interest. The same complex has tennis courts and a swimming pool. Now days most communities have pop-up rinks like the one at our fair.

Back in the early 1990s I had a 58.4 mile (95 or so KM) one way commute for a while. Every Wednesday I would skate. I kept my cheap skates in a branded computer gym bag. They were stolen. Guess someone thought they were getting a laptop.

Next to Harlik is a machine tools supplier, also a metal foundry. Quite an industrial area dedicated to aerospace. It was nice when I could walk in and get my cutting tools and broaches or parts for my lathes.

The semi-pro skating friends at the rink suggested I stop in and see if there was anything in my size. Sure enough there were a pair of boots that fit. Bit tight but a way better pair of skates than someone of my ability would need.

And yes, Schultz did have Tennis courts next to the ice rink too. I think they are still there. As I recall the Snoopy museum shares a parking lot with both.

Wonder if someone found the watch I lost last week ...

On my invoice it says calibre 168-047 but I have not yet received the report with movement photos.

@sheepdoll I hope you find your lost watch…

168.047 would be the model number for this style. The TV screen dial is fantastic! My 168.045 (cal. 751) is below:

Fabulous watch. I had the round dialed version but it was an anchor- so thick, so heavy, so much steel! A member here who is far manlier than I am now rocks it with pride.

I saw one of those in a Pawnshop yesterday.
If it was cheap and not polished to a lozenge (they are supposed to be all brushed with a sharp polished bevel along the ridges) go get it! But remember the bracelet is captive so if it’s too short you are SOL.

Agreed! It is a Connie after all and when terry cloth shirts and skin tight tennis shorts that reveal way too much come back into style- these will be in high demand!

Mine is not heavy and thinner than @flw James. I like it! I need to adjust the clasp a bit but I am not taking this watch off for a while!

Pulling leather like you do builds up those forearms. I would have needed a pigmy pony to walk beside me to hold my left arm.
