hi everyone

Just a FYI . this is still a work in progress..... The Things With Springs Clubhouse room is meant for a Live watch forum experience with a small GTG. We are striving for a collector to collector conversations.. having collectors either email me photo of there watch ( or they can join the forum and reply to this thread ) so we can " chat" about in real time... Just to be clear we dont have to talk about a posted watch ... this is a free flowing room on topics on vintage watches and things around watch collecting ... And at the end of the GTG when everyone leaves the CH room... and the room no longer exist ... This thread will remain as a quasi record of the event and we can later go back and refer to.... Hear you at 4 pm EDT Sunday ....

Hello

First, I want to chat about Chuck Maddox as its been 15 years since his passing ....

Secondly ....

I wont up getting a pretty cool clock this week at auction...

its a 8 1/2 Cheslea Ship's Bell Commander from 1902 and it was an Yacht Club Award for 1st prize that went to the " Yankee" which was one of 4 NY70 class yachts....

The sad part is 100 plus years later all we have left are the ship's bell and maybe a Clock or a trophy... this one special as its a clock and a trophy !

Good Hunting
Bill

rough notes from the internet....
New York 70 “Yankee” Specifications: LOA: 106′ 0″ LWL: 70′ 0″ Beam 19′ 4″ Draft 14′ 0″ Original Rig: Cutter Hull Number: 529 Designer: N.G. Herreshoff Original Owner: Duryea / Whitney Built: 1899 Original Price: $32,594 Status: Destroyed

Historical
Four 70-footers were built respectively for August Belmont, Cornelius Vanderbilt, W.K. Vanderbilt, Jr., and Harry Payne Whitney. To this date, the most expensive one-design class ever conceived for some of the most influential owners of this day. Superiority will only be achieved by each owners ability to excel by ones skill in sail handling and tuning by a crew of 15 professionals.

As a one-design class the owners desire to see a fair proportion of the original build price, or return on investment as possible, unlike the all an out racing machines that are outdated the following season for more extreme machines

The 70-footers are the result of the application to a larger class of the ideas and conditions that made racing in the smaller classes so interesting.

The first of this class launched was Mineola, a beautiful vessel, with a sheer the same as the defender of the tenth America’s Cup race Columbia, and hence gives the same impressions to an observer. She was painted white above the water-line and green below, with her name appearing in gold on a stern that is much a reminder as Columbia, as are other features of her hull.

Historical:

Four boats were constructed for members of the New York Yacht Club. They were lightly built, raced hard, leaked extensively and only two boats continued sailing after the first year.

The NY 70s drew 14 ft, and were said at the time to be the fastest boats to cover a triangular 30 mile coarse (2.45 hrs), with eleven miles to windward! Responding with good humor, Mr. Herreshoff was asked by William O. Gay, who owned the 11 foot draft yacht Athene, when would there be a time when Athene could beat the NY 70s, Captain Nat responded when there is less than 14 feet of water.
