The definition of ultra-thin just got a new meaning when Piaget introduced their Altiplano 38mm 900P timepiece earlier today. It is the world’s thinnest mechanical watch with a hand-wound movement. A watch that merely measures 3.65mm in height. The 900P reference finds it roots in the very first ultra-thin movement made by Piaget in 1957, caliber 9P. It's too bad most people think Piaget is just an upscale fashion brand because they make some excellent watches. My 1961 reference 912 is only 6.1 mm thick and that's with a domed crystal.

Their new Altiplano is insanely thin. I have the previously thinnest watch - the AP Classique. Mine is from 1969 and measures 4.03 mm thick with the caliber 2003. Gotta go check out the new Piagets. I hope they make this in red gold with a black dial.

 

The caliber 9P is only 2 mm thick. It's the domed crystal that takes up nearly 2 mm of the height.
