Morning all! It's Friday, it's Time 4A Pint Podcast day - this week I sat down with @ewand to talk about vintage Seiko Chronographs, which are fun, affordable, and very, very cool. I now have a shopping list... https://www.time4apint.com/podcast/2017/6/9/the-time-4a-pint-podcast-episode-11 As always, feedback greatly appreciated. Cheers Chris
Cheers Chris! Some corrections from my poor memory ;-) * The Bell-Matic was £46.80 in 1974 - https://omegaforums.net/threads/seiko-bell-matic-demo.57451/ - so would be about £500 in today's money. By comparison, in the 1973 US catalogue, the Bell-Matic was $105, and the Pogue was $100. * The Pogue collectors guide is on https://thespringbar.com/blogs/guides/the-seiko-6139-600x-collectors-guide * Water 70M Proof was on the dial from early 1969 (the earliest in circulation is from March IIRC) until early 1970, when it changed to Water 70M Resist; that lasted until mid/late 1972
Thanks Nathan, glad you enjoyed it! I've got another full on Seiko episode coming in a few weeks, with the chap who (I think?) services @ewand Seikos - I think it's fair to call him a highly skilled, enthusiastic amateur. Will be really interesting I think - Seiko made/make some fricking cool stuff!
Another great episode, Chris! Your presenting style continues to improve week-after-week. So, when are you going to move to a weekly format I passed on a nice-condition Pogue with a blue dial last year and I've been regretting it ever since as I've continued to watch the prices climb. If no one has ever tried one on, I'd encourage you to... they wear extremely well... much better than you'd expect given the lug design.
Loved hearing about the Seiko watches. Nice broad collection. I recently added to my Gen2 with a Bond Chronograph. They are great great fun. Smiled when describing the chrono function. And nice to see that they can still be bought under the radar even in todays increasing Seiko market. Great stuff
They tend to be recorded in public places - this week I spent a day getting to grips with the edit, so have managed to clean things up further. Typically there's background though.
Agree - though many Pogues for sale come on new, tapered, H-link bracelets that are $30-40 on Ebay. While they do the job, I'd recommend UncleSeiko aftermarket jobs - they're more substantial (particularly the end links) and make the watch feel a bit more hefty. http://www.uncleseiko.com/store/c2/6139_Chronograph_Accessories_.html I have the UncleSeiko H-link on my yellow Pogue and the President on one of the Silvers. Well worth the upgrade.
Fun show. I bought a yellow proof dial 6139 a few years ago. Was trying to find a silver one to go along with it recently and was shocked to see how much they were going for now. That said, given the number of variations on models out there, the vintage Seiko world is a lot of fun.
cool cool, just checking. i listen to the pod cast on my subway ride to work (equivalent to your tubes in london) found myself cranking the volume very high, thought it was the headphones going again. thanks!
There's quite a spiffy 7a38 on WUS at the moment, for not a whole lot of cash... http://forums.watchuseek.com/f29/fs-seiko-7a38-7280-december-1987-excellent-condition-4392826.html
Dammit, I was just listening at work today thinking wow that quartz Chrono sounds great! My replacement skx007 only just arrived this afternoon too. Bad timing!
Morning all! @ewand was next in line for the remastering treatment, and now you can listen to 33 minutes and 36 seconds of Seiko (with a little Omega) goodness without having to strain your ears. Listen Now
