I have added a new X-33 case back to the collection signed by Space Shuttle Commander Scott Altman. I think the image created to tell his story commanding the STS-125 Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission is one of the best pictures created for the collection.

    Altman Preview.jpg

Scott "Scooter" Altman reported to the Johnson Space Center in March 1995 as an astronaut candidate. He was the pilot on STS-90 (1998) and STS-106 (2000), and the mission commander on STS-109 (2002) and STS-125 (2009). Following two years as Shuttle Branch Chief for the Astronaut Office and lead for the Cockpit Avionics Upgrade, he was assigned on temporary duty to NASA Headquarters as Deputy Director, Requirements Division of the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate. On returning to Houston, and following STS-125, he served as the Chief of the Exploration Branch of the Astronaut Office. A veteran of four space flights, Altman has logged over 51 days in space.

And for a little more Captain Scott Altman trivia you might enjoy reading about his starring roll as Maverick’s finger stunt double in the movie Top Gun.

Please take a minute to look back at his signed case back on page one in the Space Shuttle section of the collection.

This new addition has been a long time coming. Finally, a piece has been added to the collection recognizing the contribution of female astronauts to the space program. I’m thrilled to add Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan to the collection, marking her historic accomplishment of being the first American woman to walk in space, precisely 35 years ago today.

Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan began her career as one of the first six women selected into the NASA astronaut corps in 1978. During her 15-year NASA career, she flew on three Space Shuttle missions, notably onboard Space Shuttle Discovery STS-31 that deployed the Hubble Space Telescope. Also, during her historic EVA she was among the first Shuttle astronauts to wear the Omega Speedmaster attached to an integral watchband on the right EMU glove.

This new addition also completes one piece representing each Space Shuttle — Columbia, Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavour, and finally, Challenger.

Thank you Dr. Sullivan for another first.

Updated the panel with the two recent pieces from Kathryn Sullivan and Scott Altman.

The bottom row was adjusted to add them. A place holder was added using an inoperative instrument cover from the Apollo Command Module. The shuttle missions now cover all 5 space flown shuttles and are labeled.

Always trying to improve the presentation of the collection here is an update to the instrument panel presentation.

Using the Grumman Aerospace Identification Plate attached to the Lunar Modules and flown to the Moon we recreated a new Collection Identification Plate to replace the text in the panel.

Here is the the Apollo 17 Identification Plate used as the template. The actual ID Plates measure 5.75" x 1.75".

Here is the recreated ID Plate with the collection information.

For the collection purposes the range of dates are from the beginning to end of the current pieces in the collection. The 2013 - 2019 represents the period I acquired the pieces. Other ID Plates have a stamping in the small circle between the U and S and in the plate below a Speedmaster stamp was added.

    PANEL 4 MAY FINAL.jpeg

Here is the new complete panel with the new ID Plate to scale.

Five new signed pieces for the collection were added in 2021 and here is one of the most recent additions.

I have been working on adding this new piece signed by William Readdy for his STS-79 Shuttle-MIR mission for quite sometime now. The addition of this piece recognizing Captain Readdy's accomplishments, as well as adding the first joint Shuttle-MIR piece to the collection made the wait well worth it. I think the image created for his new piece is hands down one of the best of them all.

Readdy is a veteran pilot astronaut with three space flights, STS-42 (January 22-30, 1992), STS-51 (September 12-22, 1993) and STS-79 (September 16-26, 1996). Readdy has logged over 672 hours in space. Readdy also has the distinction of being the first American astronaut, and second person, to wear the newly developed Omega X-33 Flightmaster Prototype during STS-79.

More on his fantastic adventure and the X-33's mission to MIR can be found here X-33 Flightmaster Prototype and its mission to MIR.

Thank you Captain Readdy for the great addition.

I have added a new X-33 case back to the collection signed by STS-133 Mission Specialist Nicole Stott.

Mission Specialist Nicole Stott is a veteran of two space flights spending over 100 days is space. During her distinguished 27 year career with NASA she served as an Operations Engineer in the Orbiter Processing Facility and later joined the astronaut corps as a Mission Specialist in 2000. She served as a Flight Engineer during Expedition 20 and Expedition 21 and was a Mission Specialist on STS-128 and STS-133.

Here is the most recent piece added to the collection signed by retired astronaut and U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Cassidy.

    Cassidy.jpeg

Chris Cassidy was selected as an astronaut by NASA in May 2004. In February 2006, he completed Astronaut Candidate (ASCAN) training. Cassidy is a veteran of three space flights, STS‐127, Expedition 35, and commanded Expedition 63. During STS‐127, Cassidy served as a Mission Specialist and was the 500th person in history to fly into space. Cassidy has spent a total of 378 days in space, preformed 10 spacewalks, and also served as the Chief of the Astronaut Office from July 2015 until 2017.

    You're on a roll.

Astronaut Cassidy was on the same mission where I had a document signed in the ISS for my daughter's graduation present. It included a quote from her senior thesis.

Here it is next to Cassidy's EVA suit.
