·Some watches just grab you, and who can say why? In this new acquisition, a custom-made sous marine for the famed Swiss-French jewelry company "Guilde des Orfevres" (Goldsmith's Guild, f. 1895), it was definitely the dial.
I couldn't figure out why this dial configuration appealed so much, until I realized that it was a rebranded version of the one in the Universal Geneve Polerouter Sub diver. It even has the same quirky trapezoidal date window.
The unique indices, with their bold bracketing, has long made this an absolute favourite of mine. And though the GdO may lack the elegant triangular batons, it, too, makes a strong design statement with its oversized lollipop sweep and chunky diver hands. So, while the UG diver will likely remain forever beyond my reach, I can still enjoy its aesthetic in my own "poor man's" version.
