·What with a world gone mad ... this 'Fakkken' virus which just doesn't want to 'Fakkoff' and die (all 'Fakks' credit to and in honor of @nonuffinkbloke)... and some already crazy and ridiculous happenings in the recent past ... there is no harm in a bit of dubious speculative cow manure to brighten up the Xmas-lockdown-holidays.
So, which one will be the next to pump, and why?
Here is my vote and reasoning:
1. Perfection. The only way this could have been better was if it had a 321 (but does it really matter in this case?) ... and that would have to be a first generation 321. Which was unfortunately not the case with the 321 in Gene's Ed White that was CT scanned to create the current generation of 321. And naturally if it had the same bracelet as the new 321. But for $125 this can be 'fixed'...or if you are a pedant like me, with patience and a lot more cash, a mint vintage 1035/506s can be found...
2. Value. It is still rather cheap - dare I say undervalued - compared to the current generation of Speedmasters, all things considered (as of writing, about 7k, which is what they cost in 2017 when they arrived). If it had a 321, it would be worth double (and it would have the wrong 321). The dial still has sub-second markings to fit a 321 (now that they smartened up we probably will never get a new 6Hz movement with an old 5Hz dial again) so a die hard could make the switch...but personally i'm fine with the 1861...
3. It hasn't pumped. Not that I could care less - this one sits purely in my heart as a collector and enthusiast and my love for it has not wavered at any time, not even when it was 'worth' less than RRP according to the open market. All other nice LE's have sadly gone ridiculous to the point of not-much-chance-of-ever-appreciating-one-on-wrist. This one not. That leaves me to believe that at some point the right owners (people like me) will snap them up.
4. Its uncommon. While rarity is relative (1 in 50 for example is my definition of rare), relative to a lot of the crazy priced mass produced pieces, there are only 3557 of these (with unnumbered dials) ... so, I guess like most LEs (that are roughly half that) it is quite 'rare'.
All dubious speculation and utter hogwash aside (feel free to add yours!) ... I wish you all (+ loved ones) a merry Xmas 👍
