The next Speedmaster LE to go crazy? Trilogy…

What with a world gone mad ... this 'Fakkken' virus which just doesn't want to 'Fakkoff' and die (all 'Fakks' credit to and in honor of @nonuffinkbloke)... and some already crazy and ridiculous happenings in the recent past ... there is no harm in a bit of dubious speculative cow manure to brighten up the Xmas-lockdown-holidays.

So, which one will be the next to pump, and why?

Here is my vote and reasoning:

1. Perfection. The only way this could have been better was if it had a 321 (but does it really matter in this case?) ... and that would have to be a first generation 321. Which was unfortunately not the case with the 321 in Gene's Ed White that was CT scanned to create the current generation of 321. And naturally if it had the same bracelet as the new 321. But for $125 this can be 'fixed'...or if you are a pedant like me, with patience and a lot more cash, a mint vintage 1035/506s can be found...

2. Value. It is still rather cheap - dare I say undervalued - compared to the current generation of Speedmasters, all things considered (as of writing, about 7k, which is what they cost in 2017 when they arrived). If it had a 321, it would be worth double (and it would have the wrong 321). The dial still has sub-second markings to fit a 321 (now that they smartened up we probably will never get a new 6Hz movement with an old 5Hz dial again) so a die hard could make the switch...but personally i'm fine with the 1861...

3. It hasn't pumped. Not that I could care less - this one sits purely in my heart as a collector and enthusiast and my love for it has not wavered at any time, not even when it was 'worth' less than RRP according to the open market. All other nice LE's have sadly gone ridiculous to the point of not-much-chance-of-ever-appreciating-one-on-wrist. This one not. That leaves me to believe that at some point the right owners (people like me) will snap them up.

4. Its uncommon. While rarity is relative (1 in 50 for example is my definition of rare), relative to a lot of the crazy priced mass produced pieces, there are only 3557 of these (with unnumbered dials) ... so, I guess like most LEs (that are roughly half that) it is quite 'rare'.

All dubious speculation and utter hogwash aside (feel free to add yours!) ... I wish you all (+ loved ones) a merry Xmas 👍

totally agree! a 321 version would be nice, though the 1861 makes it a bit easier to maintain...

alternatively,

I will get one of those 60th's... one day. I wouldn't mind all three!

My guess is sterling silver dial Speedy, Apollo 17th 40th Anniversary. Why? Extremely different to all other Speedies. Not photogenic at all, majority of all watch enthusiasts were disgusted with pictures of the watch. They were sitting on the shelf at shops for almost 10 years. And it’s limited to even less pieces - 1972 to be precise. I bought new one for 4.500€ two years ago. See C24 how much they are now. Even over 10.000€…

You seriously might be the only person that’s bought one and actually took a picture wearing it.

From the perspective of a relative newb, I found this homage piece my favorite from a purely aesthetic perspective. I love the clean dial. If I didn’t know that other people have strong opinions against ‘fauxtina’ I would just consider the color choices a good design decision. Probably an unpopular opinion among the purists, but honest nonetheless.

Great, now you tell me, the day after I sold mine… Having sold a Tin Tin, Speedy Tuesday I and and ST Ultraman II just before they took off, I guess I can now add this one to my list of mistimed sales…

Not on the wrist but home from the boutique 3 weeks ago. The dial is amazing. Photos can not do it justice.

No offence to owners but I use this photo below which I took when one of these passed my way to scare off muggers. No I’m not a fan:

Agreed. It's a blessing they're still 'cheap'. Love mine. Love the fact that's its a unique case only being used in this model. I much prefer this shape of lugs compared to FOIS/CK2998/New 321. Also, hesalite 😉
I think some people dislike the arrow hands and steel bezel. But to me they feel at least a million bucks 🙄

thanks to Forstner for bracelet fix.

There was another special edition Speedmaster Professional that used a different movement (not a 321, 861, 1861/1863, 3861) that made the watch like 1.5 mm thinner than the regular Speedy. I don’t know the reference number or why this one was made with a different movement.

Hopefully someone knows what I’m talking about here. I think that one would be cool to get for a Speedy enthusiast. Get a Speedy pro in every movement.

The Houston boutique had this one on display for literally years probably almost a decade.

I think you're referring to this one with the cal 3201:

1962 - 2022 = 60 years Speedmaster in space...
In an interview with YouTube channel TeddyBaldassarre Omega CEO Raynald Aeschlimann mentioned an important Omega Speedmaster anniversary for 2022...
Of course this will be 50 years Apollo 17 & the Last Man On The Moon ... and not 60 years Omega Speedmaster onboard MA-8 Sigma 7 in October 1962 1f9d0.png ...
Anyway, most of us spaceflight aficionados are really looking forward to a real spaceflight tribute Speedmaster for 50 years ASTP - Apollo Soyuz Test Project Speedmaster in 2025, as the 1976 Apollo-Soyuz Speedmaster still remains the most awesome tribute ever made for a spaceflight mission... made at less than 500 pieces it was something to celebrate, not something just to sell !

Not a lot of love for this one. I think they finally sold the US ones. When I got mine there were only 2 left in US boutiques. You either love it or hate it. 😲
