Hmmm. One I will have to see in person before I come to a conclusion.
I do like the white dial with blue bezel though...just from the colorway.

I love a Moonwatch as much as anyone, but pretty much anything can be a space watch.

This article identifies almost 2000 watches worn in space on missions. It's a pretty open and welcoming category.

Of those, almost 800 were Omegas, and of those, about only 350 were Speedmasters, many worn more than once on different missions. More narrow, but some of these were Alaska editions, and even a Snoopy. There were non-Speedys like Seamasters, and of course the X-33s.

Discussions about what is or isn't a real moonwatch can be interesting when they consider whether a watch must have been worn on the moon or on a NASA mission. But it isn't worth losing friendships.

And Yet Omega have previously made column wheel automatic wind chronographs at 13.5-14mm thickness. As noted above, the base 7750 is a bit of a fatty, that's the reason this and all other similar chronos from other manufacturers are thicker than is ideal.

This is most definitely not what I would call a Moonwatch!
It is surprising to me that Omega hasn’t yet made their own compact automatic chronograph caliber. If Swatch weren’t deliberately throttling the resources available to them, I think it would be a cool move to let Omega use a dressed-down version of Breguet’s caliber 582, a direct descendant of the Omega 1040/ Omega 1340. (Albeit perhaps on a more premium automatic variant of the Speedmaster.)

That movement has a direct visual connection to the 861 caliber, and also looks amazing visually, being a traditional-style horizontal clutch chronograph that has been thoroughly redesigned for automatic operation. Alas, Swatch will Swatch.

It's a good point but I wonder if they got their fingers burnt a little with their last skinny auto chrono movement, the 3303/3313. That was based on one of the thinnest chronograph movements ever made, the F Piguet 1185 but did have a few teething troubles, ironed out eventually and they barely use it now. It is a pity as it allowed for models something like 2mm thinner than the 7750 stuff. It is also noticeably thinner than Omega's own in house chronograph movement, the 9900 which is not petite in any dimension. The Broad Arrow Speedmasters which used the 3303/3313 were very technically advanced for their time (20 years ago) yet barely register on most collectors radar these days.

Wasn't the 1040 you refer to the auto used in the so called Grail? If so that was a tad agricultural in look with lots of Delrin on display and I sincerely hope Breguet modified it a long way from its humble origins! That said, perhaps in the Omega Skunkworks right now there is a project to make a 21st Century Grail reboot with a movement not far removed from that you describe...

The Grail actually used the Lemania 5100/Omega 1045, which if I recall correctly, was a clean slate design that utilized a vertical clutch (in addition to the synthetic components). Swatch killed it for pretty much every brand except Tissot, I think, precisely because of the 'agricultural' look. It lived on for a bit with Tissot as the C01.211, but it appears to have finally met its end two-ish years ago.

The Piguet movement is an industry classic, but I suppose it didn't have an especially strong heritage link to the brand, and wasn't an exclusive design like the 9900 series.

I do think that if Omega were ever to modernize/reintroduce the 1040, they'd be able to position it as a compact auto chronograph movement that is visually distinct (and arguably more interesting) than the vertical clutch chronographs with plates covering all the cool components. They'd also potentially be able to avoid the cost of developing a totally new movement, since they'd essentially just need authorization to use it. But again, Swatch will do as Swatch does.

Thickness at nearly 15 mm cancels out any and all cool features of this line.

Nearly 15 mm thick is bad enough, but in a 38 mm watch!!!! Terrible. I thought my 39.5 mm PO had bad proportions.

I never find myself at 50m depth, so a normal speedy is good enough for me!

100m water resistance on a Speedmaster is not a novelty. And certainly not a compelling reason to buy this model. Just saying!

If they can find a way to get the thickness closer to about 13.25mm or so, I think they'd sell a ton. That's the main problem I have with the midsized Omegas. Too thick. They feel and look like hockey pucks.

I can confirm i`ve never seen Erich at 50 mtr depth. He is just never there. So a pointless watch for him 🤿
