Kazakhstan squirrel art installation sparks backlash over costs

A 40ft (12m) tall squirrel is causing controversy after popping up in the city of Almaty in Kazakhstan.

The rodent, which is made from straw and wood attached to a steel frame, is part of an art project for a festival commissioned by city authorities.

It reportedly cost 23 million Kazakh tenge ($67,000; £51,000) to create and was paid for in part with public funds.

As a result the installation sparked a backlash, with some suggesting the funds could have been better spent.

The oversized squirrel, which can be seen in images shared on social media clutching an equally oversized nut, is part of the Art Energy festival held in Almaty that features more than a dozen individual pieces.

Kazakhstan has a ways to go when it comes to spending public money. Here in Canada we would easily blow over 1.5 million on a piece of junk like that.

And then have an inquiry into the cost of the squirrel and blow off another 650 grand on that.

Natural gas money, they don't care...Look at Astana, they dump a lot of money to all different kind of building and installations.

The capital Astana is a very obnoxious use of public funds. Almaty is actually a lovely and relatively affluent city with great skiiing just outside of town. Nice to see a bit of levity there though!

Of all the public funds being spent there on ridiculous things, funny that this is what makes it to the news. I guess it's better to have the populous focus on squirrels than private trips, mansions, and mistresses. 😜

And Almaty is a beautiful city, especially when you drive out to the mountainsides above the smog.
