I have noticed that when someones first post starts with authenticating an omega it usually starts in one of two ways. The first one is "ive just found this watch at a fleamarket cheap is it genuine?"
Or theres the more sinister story "hi guys my uncle has just given me this omega he got from his holidays in thailand."
The background to the second story is this, some guy has started sniffing round my divorced mother. Your mother claims its some sort of long lost relative hence the term uncle. Next thing you know shes been whisked away on some foreign holiday. They come back two weeks later with your poor mum looking like shes ran a marathon every day. Your fake uncle looks a bit sheepish and guilty on his return with her and decides to ingratiate himself with you. "Here you go young Johnny ive got you a nice Omega"
At first your taken aback hes bought you a luxury item and its a beauty, "theres no box young Johnny but its a good un"
Your faith in uncle Hector is restored, why else would a stranger buy you a luxury item if he wasnt a blood relative?
Anyway two weeks of wearing the watch later and your wrist goes a slight tinge of green. Wheres uncle Hector these days mum?Hmmm i will join a specialist forum and clear this up once and for all. Your first post goes something like the above examples at which point you have found out that you pimped your mum out for a fortnights worth of rumpy pumpy for the princley sum of a ten dollar watch.

Too many uncles with an unhealthy like of Thailand - I wonder why?

The thing that pisses me off is all of the first posts that carry no introduction but just post a link with a cursory comment of "what do you think of this?" What ever happened to doing your research, making a few mistakes and learning? Due diligence is not just posting on a forum and getting upset because you don't get the answer you want to hear within a few minutes.

Newbies, show some respect to the people who have learned this hobby over many years and usually made a few (expensive) cock ups-along the way. This is not about making a few quick bucks as quickly as possible without putting in any hard work yourself. Try going on WUS, they like to show off over there whereas the people here, are genuine enthusiasts and give their advice and experience freely to others who are genuinely interested.

If I had a nickel for every time I've heard the same few bullshit stories about a fake watch like "My uncle gave it to me" I wouldn't have a mortgage. Only ONCE have I seen an authentic Patek Philippe out of all the "Is this Patek real?" threads started by n00bs. Somebody (I think it was Watchbreath) suggested we start a Hall of Shame for them.

In my short time here I've been surprised by the amount of people who ask for advice with their first post and then seemingly disappear. I agree, do your research. There's a lot that can be found on the internet these days. This is a great site to follow and I appreciate the information and insight.

I'm not sure if you guys have thought about this, but maybe it's possible these types of postings are by people creating the fakes and looking for feedback?

Enjoy reading the reply after they are told its fake... Or the first post with 6 links to re-dials that clearly say they are... Then there is the link to the oooohhh shiny 5x the price anyone here would pay. But the best is I want a 1967 speedy with a $2000 budget (ie Research this for me but don't buy it,tell me and I will buy it..)

I am on a fishing forum and after posting a few photos of a decent reef catch the amount of never posted a thing sending you a message asking for the GPS position... At least you can have fun with this one. ;)

    This is a quality rant!

Some good observations and Stewart H. has been in the zone lately. Just crushing stuff in his wheelhouse (it's a baseball expression...sorry).

good overall work, event horizon. Now, about that avatar...

I blame Google. These people come along and try to treat the members of our forum like a search engine.

You should see the look on some people's faces when they come into the shop with a watch they have had for years and is a "family treasure", etc., etc...and I tell them the truth.

I think for most of these people posting on here is what constitutes "doing research"...

That's one of the reasons I like to tell people to read the WRUW thread to find what they like and then read either chronoMaddox or Desmond's essays, if they're serious they'll do it and then ask better questions, if they don't want to do the reading they're probably not.

I was thinking the same thing. If your churning out these fake watches and want a slight edge over your shadey pals, getting feedback on your rotten, wares from a collectors forum would be the sensible thing to do.

The other guy was removed along with his thread since he was only here to discuss fake watches.

We never did find out where uncle Hector lived though and the guy took the bait like a greedy pike.
