The Day With DaveK - A Second Meeting

Last October DaveK stopped in for a visit. It was nice but he had a plane to catch.

This second visit was way more relaxing.

We started with coffee and a recent book purchase. A sweet treat prepared by Archer. Dave took some with him. If watchmaking doesn’t work out Al, you can sell these! After about 90 minutes, my wife, la Dure à Cuire had prepared a snack. Some seafood chowder picked up at a coastal village of Lake Huron. Fresh bread, salad and custard tarts. Plus more coffee.

I then took Dave to part of my leather stash. He carefully selected some leather pieces and will make more of his outstanding items.

I will call it the DaveK Duracuir collaboration. Of course, he will do all the work. I supplied the leather. The lunch… and the leather… I had promised Dave an awl from the last trip I made at the Antiques mall. I gave him the one shown by the black arrow. The other arrow points to scissors that were totally rusted. I soaked them in CLR for 3 days, then wiped them with oil. They easily cut through thin leather. Amazing! Here are the mostly rust free blades now, as Dave prepares to test them. Hands courtesy of @DaveK And since we were both wearing Omegas, why not a couple photos? Another nice visit Dave! Thanks for your friendship. The cat is afraid of everyone else and is glad you left, but do come back soon.

Starbucks, park benches?
My watch hangs have been in cars parked behind tiddie bars and outside Kohl's.

@Duracuir1 plied me with chowder and enjoyable conversation, and next thing I know I’m involved in a questionable leathersmithing venture and conspiring to bring pointy awls onto a commercial airplane

😁

Great to spend some time together Steve 👍

I should have kept the Flightmaster 😉 It would have been handy today.

Many thanks to the mods for making this community possible ::psy::

The second largest country in the world with only 37 million people, and you have to travel 4,853 kms to share an interest with a fellow enthusiast! If that isn’t enthusiasm, I don’t know the meaning of the word! Still waiting for word from @Duracuir1 regarding his promise to visit the prairies!

Your part of the country is beautiful canuck. And one of only three Provinces that I have not travelled to for work. Very tempting. The other two are Newfoundland and P.E.I.

How we can end up with 37 million people with a climate like this is a wonder to me! Someone said in another thread that they were moving to Canada! My advice to those folks is, don’t come!!! I’ve spent two hours today, shovelling snow. The biggest problem is that you can remove it from where you don’t want it, but there’s no place to put it!

And to think I literally just booked a flight taking me home to Calgary next month. Need me a Prairie fix. First trip home in 3 years. I’m praying you’re blessed with a good long Chinook to melt some of that snow.

(I love my hometown but there’s a reason I moved to Vancouver 30 years ago).

You did get to travel to the Yukon, NW Territories and Nunavut as an Ontario policeman? That sounds awesome!

Anyone with a cat knows that it's best to keep them fat. It's a wierd feeling to open your eyes in the morning and see them inches from your face.

I started out as a Fed (RCMP, see my boots in the cat photo above) and was on the team of firearms instructors for VIP (bodyguard) courses. I flew into a different part of the Country each year to assist on the three week course.

Most beautiful venue was in North Vancouver. It was called the Pacific Shooters Association. Funny thing was that although I travelled by air with a gun, the airport security people still wanted me to empty my pockets of loose change etc during screening.

That seems so long ago now (1990s) and my wife is happy that those days are over. She does not like guns.
