Exciting news - the new 50th anniversary bond Omega Seamaster has come into my AD. It's not for me. It's a graduation gift for my son for getting a first class honours degree in musical performance from the Royal Northern College of Music this year. He is a fantastic jazz drummer. So, one fine time-keeper needs a fine timepiece I reckon. I think he'll love it and I think it will suit a younger wrist than mine.

I had a phone call yesterday from a fellow for whom I have serviced several a Rolex watches over the years. He told me he had three “commemorative” (his word) Bond Seamasters that he had bought over 20 years ago. They are still all in their boxes with open guarantees and hang tags still attached! He wants to give two of them to two young male relatives, and he wondered if these two watches should be serviced before he gives them.

I suggested that he find out from the two fellows parents if they even wear a watch, owing to the trend today to use Smart watches of smart phones as timepieces. To spend the money to service a NOS watch before giving it to someone who wouldn’t wear it doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to me.

Back to your thread. Indeed a very fitting way to celebrate your son’s achievement. Good for him, and good for you.

Very nice! When I first saw the watch on the Omega site I was not a big fan of the 007 repeating logo but I have to say, after looking at it in a few review videos I think it's really sharp. The image on Omega's site just doesn't do it justice, it highlights the 007 way more than it looks like it would in real life.

Great looking watch and a great gift for a great achievement!

Thanks everyone. I think he'll love it, wear it and enjoy it. I can't wait to see it tomorrow but he won't get it until later in December. Will post photos at that point.

What a great gift, I'm sure he will be delighted and won't be able to say Dr. No to that watch.

I see what you did there 😉.

If someone offered me that (or any BNIB Seamaster, really) as a graduation gift I would Never Say Never again. Congrats on your son's achievement and to you for recognizing it so wonderfully. No doubt it will Bond you still closer.

Well, we are obviously very proud of him. Here's an old video from a couple of years ago of the RNCM Big Band playing with the son of Karlheinz Stockhausen - Markus Stockhausen - on trumpet. It was a great gig. Jump to around 6.50 for the bass and drums/percussion solo - and our eldest son's drumming has improved in leaps and bounds since then which is amazing.

Since he is a jazz musician, he might appreciate the Oris James Morrison.... it's a very simple yet elegant timepiece....

Yes, I liked the look of those. He'll have to buy that himself though. He's getting this Omega from me and that's it for a while!

if they don't wear watches much, or simply don't care about a nice watch, he could sell the Bond's for cash and send them a Swatch or Smartwatch and they'd be just as happy. Then he could take his wife on vacation.

(my wife made me post this)

I believe the true beauty of giving a watch instead of money is the emotional bond you can create with this “item” vs spend it on...several small things and don’t even remember on what.
