Am I correct that the dial is paramount and most other problems can be addressed?

The dial will be the biggest challenge, but everything is paramount - case, movement - especially if you are after ONE big score. very interested to hear/see how you progress. Good hunting!

But other than finding the watch and finding the funds, I'm off to a good start!
The thread was to identify the best of 1951 and there are some wonderful examples here, but that triple date mooner makes my panties moist! (probably a flomax moment at my age)
I know I'm out of my league, but I have been hypnotized with no signs of it letting up, so slowly onward to God knows what.
Am I correct that the dial is paramount and most other problems can be addressed?
Any help with appropriate case and movement identifications? The catalogue just states Ref. 590 and 595.
I'll move more specific questions and examples to a new thread in the future,
Thanks again, everyone!

The condition of the dial and movement typically go hand in hand and while it is not difficult to find a TDMP for sale in any condition it is a lot more challenging to find one that is not only all original but is in very nice shape which is what I think you should be looking for. It is also important for these watches to make sure that all the functions are working properly - that all pushers work as they should since some key parts for this watch are near impossible to source.

If a triple date moon phase has tickled your fancy, don't forget that quite a few manufacturers made them so you don't necessarily have to be limited to an Omega version.

A quick search on eBay under triple date moon phase will bring up results. For example (some of these are redials):

Great point Warren, your JLC and cufflink combo made my wife swoon !
Having said that, being of English heritage and named James (Teeple, James Teeple) and owning an Omega for 40+, I shall start with this focus and undoubtedly branch out as my learning tree grows. It seems this hobby has endless possibilities.
Warren, you've helped me from day one and I will always hold your observations in the highest regard.

Go here:

http://www.omegawatches.com/spirit/history/vintage-omegas/vintage-watches-database

Open up "Show more filters". Under Collection, choose "Cosmic" and under Functions, choose "Moonphase" (one word, not two). You should see something like this:

The reference numbers in the 1950 catalog I posted seem to be only for the Swiss market, or the specific retailer that produced that catalog. The ones above are what you will find on the inside of the casebacks, once you find one.

Good luck in your search, you're going to need it unless you're able to convince MSN to part with one of his.

Not too likely,

I think your best bet is to find either a nice stainless steel ref. 2471 or a 14k/18k version of ref. 2473 if your budget allows it. For a nice 2471 you're talking about $2500 or so and add another $1k or more for a nice 2473. Of course if it is a very nice example with really clean dial and movement then expect to pay a premium for that.
