    Hey all,

Since the birth of my second son, I have needed to choose my watch that I wear at home quite carefully, what with the drool, milk, food, or any other bodily fluid that makes its way to me. After spending one too many nights scrubbing out gunk from my Omega fabric strap, I realized that being a parent limits one's choice of watch, at least for a few years. And so here are what I feel are appropriate criteria for a "Dad Watch" :

    (1) Good water resistance - Because if you have to take a watch off every time you wash something, you might as well give it away.

    (2) Easily cleanable - As noted above, fabric and leather straps just don't work with little kids. I get a kick out of the Patek Philippe ad where the father and son are baking in a kitchen with a pile of flour, the former wearing a beautiful Patek on a very expensive leather strap....foolishness! A good dad watch needs to be easy to rinse off, without fear of staining or damaging the case or strap.

    (3) Classy and refined - Some days, the only personal time for a parent is the two minutes you get to admire your timepiece. Parenting is hard work, and you deserve a nice watch! However, I feel that a watch that is too flashy or impractical doesn't jive well with the dad concept.

Out of my collection, my 2000's Omega Railmaster (2503.52) is my go to piece over the past two years, and I find my other watches have been taking a back seat, at least until the kiddos can eat and poop without assistance. It has excellent water resistance, and after a quick dip in some soapy water, it is ready for the next shift. It also pairs well with Thomas the Train ;)

    What are your thoughts?

    Cheers,

    Gokul

Two words: Cheap. Casio. You'll find them in a revolving rack, near the diaper aisle, across from the butt paste.

Rolex GMT, older the better. I have a special affinity for the "Fat Lady" Coke bezel models:

New Railmaster LE. Still a slight chance that they're available if you ask to be placed on the list, and the proportions are fantastic:

Sinn 103 Acrylic. Built like tank, German unfussiness, and you can now time your kid's dumps!

Seiko PADI Turtle. If it's good enough or PADI, it should be good enough for you:

Longines Legend Diver with Omega Mesh. Timeless, awesome:

+1 for a Seiko SRP. Great watch, can take a beating, no issue when it needs a scrubbing, and totally dad worthy. They always look better beat up anyway. Also not a bank breaker since you can pick them up for about $300 US.

+1 for Sinn. Super cool, incredible tech, great company, better watches. Certainly not as much of a budget beater, but they have plenty to choose from in the range of $1000-$4000

If you want an Omega, I think a Seamaster 300 with the ceramic bezel is great, and timeless. You'll enjoy it for years and whichever son pukes on it first will enjoy it when he is old enough to wear it too.

I usually will take off the days vintage watch and put on my "watchco" Seamaster 300 or one of the Zodiac Sea Wolf skin 53 reissues for dad duties. They rise off well when worn on bracelets and the the Seamaster has taken a whack with a t-ball bat without issue.

Modern Tudor or Rolex for sure in steel on bracelet with a possible swap to RubberB/Everest. No natos, leather, or vintage for a little while. You're gonna be wet and messy at times.

Nice watch, I think that looks great on the wrist. Not at all flashy looks functional and classy without looking bling. My next purchase I think.

Whatever you choose, it must have really good lume, so you can check the time during the night without waking anyone and realising that only 20 minutes has passed since your previous waking!

Thanks. The fact that it doesn't look too flashy is my favorite thing about this watch.

Too many cracks and crevices for poop and goo to migrate into in that selection. So no rotating bezels, good water resistance, brushed so it won't show the scratches and a steel bracelet with as few elements as possible.....::confused2::

I have it! We have found the Raison d'Être for the Rolex Explorer I.

@Riviera Paradise ..... are you secretly preparing for a family expansion :p
