I’m not sure what to think about the reintroduction of the 321. For me the space connection is one of the more imortant things around the Speedmaster. What is more related to space - a 1861 or a modern reproduction of the 321? I’m not sure to be honest. I know that it was the 321 that was worn on the moon and in Apollo/Gemini missions. Having said that - will a modern recreation of that movement build a bridge to that era? For me - not so sure.

The 1861 on the other hand is used in space or at least was according to other forums. The 861 was tested and qualified for shuttle missions and has been in space.

Which one has the most relevant space connection? A movement though not used on the lunar surface used in space or a retake of an old movement.

I’m leaning towards the 1861 or even more the 861...

The column wheel 321 has smoother actuation then the cam chronograph in the 861. That’s the main draw after being the first in space and only one on the moon.

Both the 861 and 1861 have space cred. Just not on the moon or first in space cred.

Besides the column wheel, the bridges on the 321 are more complex and look better than its successors.

Main issue I have with it:
    a) The frequency is lower, therefore, the seconds hand movement in the chronograph will look more 'janky'.
    b) Let's be honest, it is outdated tech: IIRC, designed back in the middle 40's.

The other day I saw an interview of Chuck Maddox with an astronaut and he said that an automatic movement would be more suited to the task of being in space.

When it comes to the 321, it's scarcity is the primary driver for its desirability. Having one means you are part of an exclusive club.

My question is would you love Porsche to make a brand new 901?.What a blast from the past that would be with new minted reliability. It's the same with a new 321 movement.Brand new reliability,no old parts that are slightly worn with age and you have the moon and space connection.

I don't think there'd be much demand for the 901, considering Singer has made a superior version, and I think the same applies to Omega--older isn't always better, I'd be happier with a more accurate manual (or automatic movement) with hacking.

@Yukatan they modify a 964... granted it’s the perfect 901 that never existed...

That being said mad props for referencing the 901!

It's not the Flathead V8 they're bringing back.
It's the Cleveland, which is much better.

The elephant in the room longterm is going to be servicing.

    Ask yourself.
Do you want to be at the mercy of a tightly controlled service model?
Which is surely going to be the case with the re-introduction of the 321.

As it stands, the 1861 can be more easily serviced according to all the experts.
Besides how often are you planning on using the chrono function to take advantage of a nicer action through the pusher?
It's not like we are talking about playing a musical instrument at the highest levels.

I have to admit that I know very little about the 321 movement, as such I'm not really bothered if it is fitted as standard to the new 50th watch or not.
The relationship I have at our local OB means that I have a good chance of getting one of their first batch, but it will really depend if I prefer it to my Co-axial Speedy which I'm still really enjoying.

I think you missed my point.
We all like the old ,vintage, historic watches, cars, motor bikes etc.Experiencing the nostalgia of driving an old 901 in new condition would give me goosebumps as would wearing a new 321.
It's the pleasure of going back to a by gone era.

I guarantee that if Porsche made a modern version of the 901--if that were possible with all of the current automotive regulations and standards--demand would be massive.

how about just a business decision after thorough marketing research indicated the move would benefit shareholders?

Agreed, but hopefully not mutually exclusive...maybe they get satisfied plus us pathological collectors.

But it would need VW to run the emissions tests to get it past the current emissions rules ;)

Oh no I understand your point, my point is if Porsche were able to make a low-production, faithfully reproduced 901 (in line with the analogy of Omega making the 321 in limited, exclusive qualities) without running afoul of emission or crash standards, I'd rather have a newly minted '73 911 RS, or a 993 GT2--my point is the oldest 911 model in of itself doesn't necessarily make it the most compelling.
