Now not only do I really want a 1016 or 6610 Explorer but no doubt loads of other people do too - pushing the high price even further! This watch-collecting game is a terrible affliction 馃槈

That's the cost of expanding connoisseur-ship. It's been constant in the hobby for many years - every year some watch that was always on your list moves beyond reach as it gains popularity. It makes us all pine for the golden past, when buffalo were thick upon the plains, and each arrow shot into the sky brought down a half dozen quail! Alas!

As a footnote, I like it better on leather. Steel does now work for the E1

Same here, I鈥檝e always thought that if I鈥檓 ever going to have a Rolex it鈥檚 gonna be the 1016.

Jacek has a few more on HQ Milton, some cheaper than that one at the link.

The big benefit though is Hodinkee's managed to make us socially acceptable, and in some cases almost fashionable. For some of you that seems hard to believe (and some of you are still deeply unfashionable) but in all seriousness, we used to be in that same category as stamp collectors, trainspotters and presidential campaign badge collectors, now we're on par with or possibly a rung above vintage car collectors.

Now wearing a vintage Lemania chronograph makes you a trend setter rather than an anorak and your family members don't have to be quite as ashamed to be related to you when you start talking about Vulcain Crickets and LeCoultre Futurematics.

I'd gladly trade all of my social acceptability for another crack at 2009 prices.

I was reading Chuck Maddox's price guide from 2001 on Speedmasters the other day, that'd certainly be nice again too lol

That 1016 is pretty crazy, I just hope that I can one day find a late model 1016 in an unpolished condition. Oh yeah, I hope I can afford it as well...

The 1016 is one of the all-time greats. I also appreciate the way Rolex has updated/upgraded the Explorer through the years. Both the 36mm 114270 and the 39mm 214270 are stealthy, versatile, bad-ass tool watches.

ah, but if prices were, say, dropping over time not rising, there'd be other things to worry about as a decent amount of money in a collection slowly reduced in value...... ying, yang.....

Ahhh the buffalo and the quail, they were good times indeed! I'll have to get saving is all - no pain no er, luxuries.

Nice versions @pitpro and @Nobody Move, but I'd gladly pay @Archer Tuesday for that 1016 today 馃榾

That's one of the nicer 1655s I've seen, early or late. I almost snagged one, but had to return it because of a ding on a lug which bothered me. I miss it...

Unfortunately not mine - just servicing it...
