So, I’m a customer service fanatic. After all, we are all someone’s customer (I’m a marketing and sales guy, BTW). Provide a good experience and I’m the first to thank you and promote your business far and wide. Take my money while making the customer experience both painful and irritating (telcos, anyone?), and I’ll likewise, um, promote it widely.

Yesterday was a great day. Bought new wheels and tires for my (new-to-me) VW. Sales rep was so effusive and enthusiastic; a really passionate VW/Audi guy who was more concerned about the connection with a new customer than the sale itself. We spoke on the phone for over 40 minutes. My kind of sales.

Then, off to a detailing shop - a local legend even though it’s only been around for a few years. In fact, you’re only accepted as a client by referral or by first buying a full-meal package. I was referred and I only needed a minor detail and engine wash. The service was spectacular. Tiago is clearly a great owner and boss, with an ethic I don’t often see in most guys his age (maybe 30?). From the (not knock offs) Eames lounger and Barcelona chair and ottoman in the waiting area to the vintage Porsche Racing images on the wall behind (to remind you of your location!) the place was totally professional.

We finished the walk around inspection and settled up. After handing me the bill he thanked me for the business and then added, “nice Speedmaster, by the way”. My watch was barely peeking out under my jean jacket cuff! I was super thrilled, of course. Naturally, that opened an entirely new conversation about watches, vintage and otherwise. Made my day.

I’ve only gotten one random compliment on my Speedy- it was in the line for the cashier in the cafeteria at work. Guy behind me saw it as I was paying and said “nice speedy”, he was wearing one too.

We had dinner in a restaurant last August or so.. in the UK it was between covid lockdowns, so restaurants had just about reopened after 4 or 5 months of closure.

Anyway, to your point.. the service was incredible, wine recommendation was absolutely spot on and we generally had a great time with the waiter. When it came to paying up, he allowed us to sit at the bar and have a few more drinks, which at the time, given restrictions, I don’t think was totally permitted.

Whilst sat at the bar having my nightcap, the waiter, probably mid-late 20s, struck up a bit more conversation, then gingerly asked ‘is that a speedmaster on a nato strap on your wrist?’ I’m fairly sure my face lit up (my other half rolled her eyes) and we talked for a bit about it.

Topped my night off. I love that it’s only generally recognised by people (and very rarely) who know watches and want to have a proper conversation.

Pics of the VW with new wheels will be required.
Soon - wheels are coming from out east. Great company from all accounts. Way cheaper than BBS and super high quality.

Now ...a mea culpa. I traded in my beloved 2008 Audi TT on a 2019 Golf - 6 speed manual (not 8 speed DSG - my wife bought a 2021 Golf which got this ball rolling - yeah, matching sweaters are next 😁). It's super fun to drive! And I'm way less of an impatient ass on the road.

Anyway, it's not a GTI nor an R; it's a plain old black Golf. Now that gigs are coming back, I really need the cargo space for my drums. The Audi hatch was great but it's not really a drummer's car.

I've definitely heard of Fast. Handful of other Golf's running those.
The Golf is the ultimate vehicle in my opinion. Practical, functional and fun to drive.
There is a reason I keep buying them, and am having a hard time trying to convince myself to get something else when the time comes...

I appreciate why you keep buying them: over many years they’ve consistently received great reviews from the pundits. A colleague of mine has nearly 300,000 km on his 2001 Golf and it runs like a top.

The separation anxiety from my Audi TT is beginning to fade. I’m really digging the Golf. And the sunroof, Apple CarPlay and manual transmission just add to the experience.

Was wrestling with a government passenger at the airport a few months back with a diplomatic passport and was saved by her husband who spotted my Speedmaster and said he’s always wanted one and we got chatting.

Saw same government lady the other day and was just about to wrestle about the same thing but she remembered me as the guy her husband who wasn’t there this time was chatting to previously and stopped.
Asked her if he had gotten his watch yet and she said “ he’s a watch nerd “ “ he’s always showing me these damn watches that all look the same “
Told her to just buy him a Speedmaster for Christmas…..
