    Found this bad boy recently.

In the listing to my eyes they looked steel.

Arrived today it looks gold / brass. The seller tells me - it’ll polish right up - it’s just tarnished. Remember it’s over 50yra old.

BS - or not? Ive been offered a return.

Can’t see a hallmark anywhere - I was immediately tempted to just soap and water it.

Was just curious if folks had seen this type of aging on a caseback that’s been kept out of a watch for a long amount of time.

The test doesn’t give a nicotine whiff- so it’s a puzzle to me
Edit- soap and water fail. No changes

I've seen dozens of these, none tarnished. You might try some Mother's Mag polish. Remember: "There's no shine like Mother's!"

I’m pretty sure you just have an early one.
By the way my ‘dust cover evolution’ post linked to above is not to be taken as gospel, it was to get the ball rolling. However I am certain about the first and last ones, it’s just the ones in between that need more work and there’s probably one or two more types to add.

These are not made of precious metal, and aren't really "dust" covers. They are anti-magnetic covers, and are made of magnetic material (see below) designed to prevent the movement from getting magnetized.

    096FE0037 | CALOTTE ANTI MAGNE 1450012/22

    MATERIAL : SOFT IRON

I can't say that I have seen one discoloured as much as that one is, and so evenly, but they do get discoloured sometimes and I've seen some that were quite yellow in colour.

    Cheers, Al
