A friend has asked for advice for a purchase he is contemplating. He owned a Tag in the past and likes the Aquaracer and Formula style. Criteria:

    Quartz or auto
    Chronograph or diver
Max budget of USD $1500 but probably like to keep it closer to $1000
Doesn't want to consider gray market or used

Thought I'd throw it out to the OF members for some ideas. I appreciate all those that take time to respond.

    - Tissot t-sport

    Divers:

Thanks, I had suggested the Certina DS and the Hydroconquest so that reinforces those potential choices. It is really for a friend! I'm sure these are all decent watches but I have zero interest in buying one for myself.

If it's a diver he's after, he could try https://mintevolutive.com/ or http://www.wmtwatches.com/ , both are Submariner/ GMT / Black Bay type designs with automatic movements (ETA in the Mint) and fun customization options. I have a Mint Evolutive and it's pretty good.

the longines would be my choice. if your pal would be willing to go for second hand he could really save a bundle on the longines, oris or certina. probably enough to pick up 2 out of 3 for the price of 1 new.
