I have seen some references in other threads but is it possible for genuine dials not to have the "Swiss" mark below 6. I am looking at a nice compur but it seems to be missing the Swiss mark. Avoid?

From the sound of your post, I am compelled to conclude that you don't have access to pictures of the watch in question? I would say that, with the absence of the Swiss mark on the dial, there may be a whole lot of other visual cues that would point in the direction of Swiss, or not Swiss.

Some friendly advice. Before considering a vintage especially the one you are referring to, you need to spend many months if not a year plus doing your homework on the model in question. As a fellow novice I speak from experience of making mistakes and enjoying nice watches after the hard work.

Which model that you mentioned? Could you give an example for that?

It a bit like going to the supermarket and buying a basic range of baked beans hoping they will be heinz beans ...
No swiss at six should sound alarm bells
