Summer Blue Birth Year Watch?

First of all, a big thanks to this community for all the advice provided over the years!

I am now preparing to buy a birth year watch (2023) for my son. I already have a Speedy Pro (birth year watch for my daughter), and I am debating between a Seamaster Heritage Summer Blue, a SMP300 Summer Blue, and a SMP300 (Regular) Blue. I am planning on visiting a local AD this weekend (no OBs near me), but interested in your opinion, especially for those that have seen the Summer Blues in person. Are they too trendy? Will they stand the test of time? I wouldn't mind a more playful watch (compared to the Speedy Pro), but I would like it to be an everyday watch for my son eventually.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry no real input on which one but I love the thought of this. My son is 12 and I bought him his first watch, a Casio, for his last birthday. He is now eyeing up my collection!

Thanks! Wish I had a birth year watch (without having to take a chance on a now-vintage model, which is far outside my knowledge level), so trying to make provisions for my kids!

My youngest is 6-yo now and he loves all of my watches with a display back, and loves my orange Nomos because it's "a halloween watch".

But the reality check is that you can't possibly predict what those kiddos are going to actually want to wear as a watch way in the future, assuming they even care the tiniest bit about these things. Both my older boys, now adults -- similarly exposed to all those "cool gears and spinny things" in their childhoods -- could not care the slightest about watches today.

So buy what you like, wear it regularly, let them hold and even wear them (car rides are good for that) and just know... watches is very likely going to be a you-thing all to yourself. 😀

That's a very fair point. I guess if watches weren't my dad's thing, there's no reason to assume it will be my kids' thing either. I'll do my best though!

I saw all the “Summer Blue” models in person at an AD in Berlin, and they only one that impressed me was the Planet Ocean. The mixture of the blues on that one felt organic. All the others felt forced.

but my opinion, only, of course.

I wouldn’t pay the price premium for them, but get a standard one instead.

Congrats. Color is always subjective so a neutral dial would be safest. I have a similar thing going on and am considering getting another one of the same model Moonwatch.

The summer blue watches are all good options because they will be timeless. All they have to differentiate them is a gorgeous blue dial and bezel. That does not go out of style

Exactly. Tough to decide whether to play it safe for the long term.

Thanks! Also think they might be special because they were released on the birth year.

Go with the Summer Blue. We don't know how well these will "hold" value going forward but it is going to be a "limited" production run for the 75th anniversary, so, probably better than your average Omega, and certainly more unique.

I picked the Heritage over the SMP. Taste is subjective, but both my wife and I thought the SMP summer blue dial was too "busy." Just like the SMP, the Heritage dial is incredibly dynamic, looking silvery blue in some light and intensly deep blue in others.

Also, the current Heritage bracelet is wildly good.

that said, I think the Heritage dial is the ultimate "me" watch dial, and ymmv.

If the kids see you wear and enjoy them. Someday they may wear and enjoy them. Or not. And its all OK! Enjoy your choice.

Thanks for this feedback (and the wonderful pics)!

The bracelet is a significant factor for me - I've heard great things about the heritage one, and I am not a fan of the look of the 300m one, which I would probably get on rubber, if I go that direction.

For me, having not seen them yet in person, the cons of the heritage are the lack of lyre lugs (love them on the Speedie) and the lack of a sunray finish. The cons of the 300M are the Helium escape valve and the bracelet. Yes, I know nearly all of these cons are part of the DNA of the respective watches...

Do you mind sharing where you sourced the heritage?

My original thought process was... I plan to hand the watch down 20-30 years forward. So what watch is relevant today that was here 30 years (even 50 years) before? Subs, Moonwatch?

But who's to say whether there will even be watchmakers in the future to service the thing. By then everyone will have cyborg arm with built in clocks.

Yes, the sunburst effect on the 300M is quite stunning- but this watch has an almost "sunflecked" quality to it. It's not as intense as the sandblast of the first gen, but the varnish has texture and definitely throws off a lot of light in the sun, almost "glowing."

I got really, really lucky with this, to be honest. I had called the OB in Bellevue, WA to see if they had any the other day, and they didn't but they DID have the PO, AT, and 300M. They said that they hadn't seen one of the heritage models in weeks and had no idea when Omega was going to ship them another one, and had only received one so far.

I decided what the heck, I'll go look at the other members of the 75th they have to see what I think of the blue, and drove up there today from Vancouver, WA (2.5hr drive). When I got there they had actually gotten one in but had a customer who had already previously reserved it, but hadn't gotten back to them about picking it up. They were willing to let me take a look at it and try it on, and I loved it.

The SA couldn't reach the customer and wasn't willing (for obvious reasons) to sell me the watch. So, my wife and I took the kids to lunch, and then went back to put my name on whatever waiting list the OB had.

When I got back, the SA HAD reached the customer, who was out of state and would be for the remainder of the month and was willing to relinquish their spot. It wasn't a hard decision to make.

From puttering around the watch forums it doesn't seem like many heritages have been sold through OBs yet, but I have no idea how many have made it to US Boutiques.

As a last note: All of my dealings with the Bellevue OB have been spectacular, and this was no exception. My children were immediately offered water and apple juice and I had a great conversation with Joshua about both the 75th anniversary line of watches and a number of speedies. My sales associate, Yebin, was incredibly polite and knowledgeable and had the bracelet sized properly in no time. I really like this OB and am super happy with how my experience went.

Thanks for sharing that info - maybe I'll give that OB a call today to see what they have in stock.

One quick point of clarification: when you talk about "sunflecked", you are referring to the heritage, right?

Also, did the OB give you a complimentary summer blue bracelet? I have heard that some others have received them with the summer blue watches from OBs.

Yes, I did receive the summer blue Trident bracelet with this watch!

Yes, when I say sunflecked I mean the heritage. It's almost like the center light blue area is set up to refract light to itself, so that in really low light it seems to grow smaller and in brighter light it seems to grow larger. So, as opposed to the light flashing around the dial effect you get with the SMP, this one is more like a star on a dimmer switch.

I was trying to catch a video of its behavior this morning but it's infernally difficult to capture with a phone camera. I did post some addl pictures on another thread, and I've got some more.
