Considering as per heading a 114060 as a retirement gift.
Reasonably well versed on the collectible models of the legendary Submariner over many years but I really am looking at this new model for the lack of running costs over the foreseeable future and the fact that I do not worry to much about a new watch acquiring some of my own battle scars.
An expensive vintage piece I am afraid I would constantly mollycoddle.
After that ramble anyone who is in the know have any pros or cons with the 114060?

I don't know much about them but if I was to go get a Submariner right now that would be my choice, ceramic no date.

I got a Sub date model, 16610 about three years ago and I really enjoy it. I have seen and tried on my wrist the new 116610 and other variants of the new style and bigger case models -- but the case size on these new models is a big turn off for me. If I was doing this again, I would get the previous no date model, the 14060. You should try both models and feel the size and looks of each on your wrist, then decide -- after all, it's a big investment or divestment 😵‍💫 There are plenty, well-cared 14060s in the pre-owned market and this option can save you some money to splurge on a nice retirement dinner and a bottle of wine

I bought a new Submariner Date 116610 in January. I absolutely love it. The case size is fine (I have small wrists, and my other daily wearer is a Bond Seamaster Pro 300M), and the build quality is everything you'd expect from Rolex. I prefer having the date function, but I would encourage you to look at both new and used before making up your mind. They each have their advantages.

I would bleed vintage Omega if cut, but last Nov i purchased the current ceramic no date sub. My first Rolex. An utterly stuning watch - i wanted a watch that would grow old with me, to be my vintage watch. I dont, and will never, regret buying it.

I dont find the case too big either, but trying current and new models before you buy is sound advice

One can really never go wrong with buying a Sub. I myself would prefer a 5512 or 5513 (can't get my head around the marker surrounds), but the new ones are lookers! I would prefer the no date as pictured.

I prefer the 14060 over the newer ceramic but it's really personal preference. Can't go wrong with either. The Ceramic GMT is also a nice choice...

I have a 116610. Omega may be my favorite brand but the Sub is easily my favorite individual watch and the last I'd part with. It feels like it was built specifically for my wrist.

Just a brief look at chrono24.com reveals some very tempting discounts on the RSP. Not a Rolex man myself, but that is a sweet looking Sub for sure! With the current GBP rates booming you surely picked the right time to retire!

I have owned a 116610 since 2010, and it is my go-to modern knock-around watch for any activity when vintage isn't appropriate. It is a permanent fixture in my stable, with no plans to let it go... although my better half does snag it now and then. 😲

It wears wears very well - the chunky lugs give it a bigger watch feel without going overboard. The bracelet with glidelock clasp is a great design, though the clasp can be a bit long for some wrists so be sure you try one on.

If I were buying a modern rugged watch today, the 114060 would be my very first choice, even over the 116610. In fact, I have considered just giving mine up to her, and getting one for me. 😗

for what it's worth, I've only recently got into watches, and after lots of research my choices were
(i) new Rolex sub
(ii) Speedy moonwatch, either last of the 3570.50's or birth year
(iii) birth year chrono or dive watch if not (ii)
(iv) Seamaster black wavy dial

so far sorted (ii) and (iii), know where I'm buying (i) (either Dom Hackett, or Amsterdam for 20% discount of UK rrp), and needing to save some funds later for (iv). Though I may also be revisiting (ii) sometime soon again.....

So yes, the sub is a great watch, and on my list.

As to whether date or no date, I prefer the symmetry of the daily on the no date and am not a fan of the bling of the cyclops - but as a colleague said, embrace it if you're having a Rolex. Mind you, I'm not a fan of everyone else thinking I've got a Rolex, so am going with the no date.

I've been thinking about this thread. Two weeks ago I bought a new SM300 Master Co-Ax ceramic, no date. I love all watches, period. That being said, I believe the Omega Master Co-Ax movement is a superior movement to the Submariner with a ceramic Bezel, for less money. I understand that a watch must "sing" to you when you put it on. I was underwhelmed when I saw pictures of the new SM300 Retro. When I saw it at the dealer, I was thrilled. It "sang" to me. Now I found mine on eBay for a really good deal here in Canada or I likely wouldn't have bought it but, I think, it would be worth your time to go take a good look at one at an AD. For the cost of a Submariner, you could get a two tone SM 300 with the Sedna gold. They are really nice and you'd have a technically superior watch. Just a thought for you to consider......

I have two friends both with an 114060, and they both love them. They've both owned other rolexes (one of them had a BLNR he just sold in favor for a pam, the other has had 3x 16570 explorer II's, explorer I's, 16570 GMT (or 2 maybe), a 14060 sub, and a few others I'm sure I'm forgetting) Both of them vouch for this and say it's the best modern all around rolex out there (in terms of wear-ability and aesthetic neutrality).

In my view, it is one of the best Rollies - pure and simple and very effective. I wear one every day

I would personally agree. I am probably one of the very few who hope that Omega makes a SM300 with a date complication ... I really like having one on my watches and I use it all the time. That said, if I had to choose between the Sub no-date and the SM300, personally I'd opt for the Omega. I do think that the movement is technically superior (albeit too new to have built the track record of the Rolex 3130). As it is, I'll stick with the two I have ... They're perfect for my taste.

Where's the picture?? Gorgeous watches

TBH it was in an AD and as I had no intention of buying I really did not feel comfortable taking pics. What an old softie 🤦
When and if things pan out there will be plenty of pics.
