Want to get either the last gen SMP with the solid black dial, or the new version with the waves. Tbh movement isn't all that important to me. If the watch works and looks awesome doing it, that's fine for me. I love the waves on the new dial, but sometimes I feel like they are too busy. I really flip flop on them a lot, but I love how they are cut into the ceramic. But I HATE that the omega logo isn't applied on this model. Sounds like such a minor thing but it drives me nuts. The previous model can be found for roughly 3k brand new, which is appealing. New ones are around 4k. What do you guys think of both of these models compared to each other? Also, I have a another question. Say I get the last gen 41mm SMP, and want to get a nato strap, which one do I need, the 19-20mm, or the 21-22mm? I cant even find the one Im looking at for under $350. Crazy!
Flip-flopping on the wave dial? HATE that the Omega logo isn't applied? Seems to me that you answered your own question.
I didnt mention the things that i like about the new one but theres a bunch. I like the new hands more. I like that the dial numbers are white. Love the case back.
I would suggest to visit an AD and see them side-by-side (which I did). Older model pluses: smaller size, applied logo. Newer model pluses: stunning ceramic dial, better caliber, white enamel for digits on the bezel.
Personally, I'd go with the solid black. Clean dial, applied logo, and the HEV is not as pronounced. Plus an additional $1k in your pocket would be an added bonus.
Especially considering that damn strap is $350. Still just something about the waves that is hanging this decision up for me. Sometimes i think they look too busy, other times they just seem to fit so well with the seamaster theme. I live on the ocean so i have a connection with that. Really having a hard time deciding.
I'd get the last gen SMP. True to the classic. Just my personal preference. Or there's always the 2500 version wave dial SMP, the one worn in Casino Royale.
Without the waves, the SMPc looks like a PO with skeleton hands. It's a lovely dial in its own right, but something about it seems off to me compared to the original SMP 300. The newer version does a terrific job of bridging the original into the 'ceramic age' so to speak; the SMPc seems like a stop-gap.
For me, it's hands down the "old" Seamaster. It seems to be the classic modern seamaster, and classy to boot. The waves are cool but I agree that they're too busy. Try 'em both on. Get the one that makes you smile.
Yeah it does look a lot like my old PO, which i sold. So now im looking for a replacement, and i like the red accents which the PO didnt have.
This is the one im looking at. Is this what youre referring to by “old” model? Theres several old models.
I think what I've come to appreciate most about the new model is how it is properly balanced. Moving the date to 6 and including the "10" on the bezel really makes it symmetrical in a way. At the same time it also is a much bigger watch, both in diameter (the extra mm makes a difference!) and the thickness with the display case - which is a drawback for me as I've got little wrists. However, once you are going to be paying all that much for a watch, might as well get to see the lauded movement every so often. So for me it's definitely the new one.
The thickness in the new one worries me. I wear these everyday and i thought even my old PO was borderline too thick. I havent had a chance to get to an ad yet to see the new one. Im not making a final decision until i do that of course but just flip flopping on some likes and dislikes with them.
Oh yeah in the casino scenes. I love that watch but i ruled that one out a long time ago because at this point it doesnt seem very easy to find one thats in great shape for a good price. Ive literally seen those models sell for more than the last gen smp’s brand new bc of how desirable they are. Im not spending 3.5-4k on a 10 year old watch. Lots of people do but thats just not me. If it were quite a bit cheaper for a nice one id consider it, but if not id rather just get a new last gen version or this new model.
They're not thick at all, nor will you noticed the extra 1mm in circumference of the case. Go try one and you will be sold, believe me.
