Strap for 6B/159

Hello to the forum. In 2016 I asked advice from The Military Watch Forum and they were very helpful in confirming that my watch looks original and good.
I am now searching for a strap.
The NATO version seems to be mention frequently but having bought a couple of new ones I am very disappointed by them ... too stiff with crude buckles and bands.
So here is the watch with existing old strap (my dad's ... was his watch since 1945).
I really like this strap as it is thin and gentle on the watch attachments and I really like the style.
I dont know the age of this strap but would like either to find a replacement/replica or take advice on a suitable period version that is not made of polyester !
I did find some pictures of a cloth strap which mentioned "hygienic" I think ... but can no longer find that.
Cloth might be appropriate issue for Mediterranean use perhaps ? (dad's theatre of service prior to "acquiring" or being issued with the watch (slight possibility of navigator training '44/'45 but cannot be certain).
Anyway .... opinions gratefully received and advice to reputable high quality sources very welcome.

Very nice original condition. What is the problem with the existing band? Maybe bring that to an leather artisan to add/sew another thin layer of leather underneath and secure the hardware ? Should not be expensive and will be the closest to original.....kind regards. Achim

Thank you "watchyouwant".
Having had some leather work done on a briefcase (old) and being extremely dissatisfied ... I am not changing the old strap.
Would rather find a new one and keep the original as it is ... it is still wearable but I dont want to put it under duress.
As far as I know the watch was used fairly regularly up till 1971 and then stored in an envelope.
Do you have any thoughts on the cloth type ?
Was previously advised to get it serviced again (only done it once ... around 1990s I think).
Any recommendations ?

Thank you "sirtaifun".
I always used stainless bands on 'daily' watches but my preference is for something more RAF 1944 or nearest for this one.
Am I correct that the cloth type was "issue" for Mediterranean forces ? (where my dad served).

Welcome! What a gorgeous watch!
I would recommend David Boettcher at Vintage Watch Straps - he specialises in this kind of thing and the prices are reasonable. I’ve bought two leather straps for my Smiths 6B and they look great.

The NATO is obviously a strap that can vary in quality and is also anachronistic for this kind of watch, as you probably know. However, modern alternatives include Perlon straps (Eulit make great ones) or the nice Swedish suede NATO straps that you can get as an alternative to nylon.

Good luck in your hunt!

Just seen your other post about “cloth type” straps for Mediterranean forces. I’m not an expert, but the VB hygienique and the AF0210 are the two straps that could fit that description. Both are Second World War straps. Both are available in replica form (originals in serviceable condition are very rare and expensive) from Rob Fraser's shop, though the VB is currently in development and is being backed by Kickstarter.

Thank you "wilderbeast".
Very helpful information and I will go through those links and have a good browse.
Dont want to leave it stuck in a box but want to give a breath of air and enjoy it occasionally.
Much appreciated - Paul

Thank you "watchyouwant".
Have been looking at that page and trying to choose ... think the original pale colour is best.
Leather seems to be difficult at the moment (Covid) as I would want a specific size/style/shape.

Thank you "DON".
Looks very good, type C according to David Boettcher ....
As he is Covid closed at the moment I will go with the canvas version from Rob Fraser and see how that looks.

Good choice! Shame David's shut at the moment, but he’s your man for a leather strap.

my Smiths on the reproduction AF0210 strap - very comfortable.
