Story in today's Japan Times. Japanese brands making a run at Swiss Watches.

Old news. People who spend money on luxury items want their watches to be Swiss, their cars to be German, and their shoes to be Italian, with few exceptions. Japanese watches are seen as inexpensive and utilitarian and will have a nearly impossible run at changing their perception (except maybe in China and Japan).

I'm with you, and would add American shoes to the list of top quality foot wear (Allen Edmonds, Alden, etc). The soles on Italian shoes are too thin to wear well, and the leather of their uppers is generally softer. It's part of their look and feel, but they don't hold up to abuse as well as English or American shoes. My post was more a generalization about reputation of certain countries for certain luxury items.

Ah yes.

The "GOTTA HAVE THE EXPENSIVE <INSERT THING>" crowd... who aren't always that interested in the thing, but more in having it, and in other people not having it... and knowing that they have it.
