Damn, I hate these kind of news. I am glad that no one got hurt. I hope they find the perpetrators and that the insurance company isn't a d*@k about covering the damages.

If it’s a sentimental piece, I’d put a $5000, no question ask reward to either the local police OR the thief. It’s a small town, words of the reward will travel fast.

This quadruples your chances of finding it—if the thief hasn’t already sold it off. This worked for me in Asia!

True, but this assumes you want to put $5,000 towards the recovery of the watch. Depending on potential insurance issues this may or may not work in your benefit. I’d also be weary of advertising a meet up where the other person assumes you have $5000 cash. It’s a terrible situation all around and I feel awful for the victim. I suppose if there is any positive outcome to this, at least nobody was hurt (or even threatened).

Sorry to learn of this @tyrantlizardrex !!!! and given you noted "expertly snatched from his wrist this morning" and no reference to it, do hope the health and emotional state of your FIL are okay ?

sure, think members would be happy, if offered this stolen watch with serial #s 5577124/4525402 would be happy to get in touch with you.

Evening all.

In irritating news, my father in law had the Patek Phillipe Calatrava 5127R-001 that he was bought as a 30th wedding anniversary present 10 years ago, expertly snatched from his wrist this morning, close to Estepona on the southern coast of Spain.

We don't have any pictures of his watch unfortunately, but it looks like the one below... although perhaps rather more worn!

If anyone is offered this watch, with serials 5577124/4525402 please get in touch.

Its theft has been registered with the Spanish police, and is now logged on the Patek database as stolen... would be lovely to get the watch back if possible

The local police seem to know who the person or people are who stole it - FIL identified them from some photographs... and very frankly, the Spanish police don't seem to mess around... so who knows what happens next?

In London, I'd expect this to disappear into the ether... in a fairly small Spanish costal community... maybe not?

Fingers crossed. 👍

At least he was not injured - I hope he gets it back / good reminder for all of us to take extra care. Times are tough and getting tougher for many so targets of opportunity will be sized more than usual I am sure.

Terrible news for the OP. I love when people post family watches but of course get disgusted by the theft and scam threads. I mentioned a while back I was a member of a magic club. I just do it as a hobby and for fun but yes a few times I have done the watch thing. What scared me was how good the professional magicians were at getting watches off me.

I could only get someone if I was doing a trick that involved me putting my hands on someone. Like a card trick where I’d hand you a card, have you sign it, and maybe touch your shoulder as I explained what I’m going to do.

the professional guys didn’t need to do all that. I just learned to keep my left hand in my pocket or my arms crossed. When people do these things for nefarious reasons it is quite sad. You won’t realize your watch is gone for a few minutes which is all they need to get away.

anyway it’s a really crappy feeling having anything stolen and since I’ve been here I’ve seen way too many stolen watch or scam stories. Just bums me out.

So sorry for your in-law !

as far as watch snatching is concerned, I once was at a conference were a magician was invited as a guest. He went around the room and spoke to different groups, so he came to us and we chatted for approx 5 minutes. He then thanks us, leaves, and stops for a second and gives a watch to my friend which was standing 10cm next to me (long before covid) saying “oops, I think this is yours”.
It was a swatch with a metal band, and he actually snatched it as soon as he came to talk to us, my buddy said he would have never noticed it was missing...

Please to report he’s unharmed - just thoroughly annoyed.

"Unharmed but thoroughly annoyed"

This is exactly how I'd expect most Londoners responded when asked how they came through the Blitz.

He’s German... and I understand there was more annoyance than I am portraying.

That is bad news...I had someone try to remove my watch in Paris in a crowded area, but I noticed and got very loud very quickly. He backed away and melted into the crowd, but I kept my watch!

Best of luck to you FIL OP! So sorry to hear this.

I wonder if watches are safer on the bracelet. It would be harder to break but I think I would mainly notice the weight being gone more than when on just a strap.

Edit: now that I think about this more, I would also guess a bracelet could also make the watch more recognizable/flashy depending on model, and that isn’t always a good thing depending on your environment.

Sorry to hear about lost watch. There may be many thefts from same gang in area being investigated by police and most likely have a suspect. I know that some people use a lock attachment sort of like an extra buckle you clip on and gives a 2nd factor approach to security.
Hope you get watch back.
